Dead right Mike. Fed up with this kind of thing. Think I’m going to dump this group right now. Moderated groups appear to be the only answer. So thanks for the links.

The times, they are a changin.

If you haven’t already, check out some of the web-based discussion groups, such as http://dgrin.com, http://www.retouchpro.com/, and my own forum http://www.curvemeister.com/forum/ where Photoshop issues are discussed in addition to curvemeister.

In groups like these you can get good expert responses to your questions, without being flamed for your efforts. It is easy to include images in your posts to show what you’re taking about.

Not to say that there is not still value in this news group, but there is additional value in the web based groups that I suggest you check out.

This is the future, folks. Enjoy.

The Nikonians spam you, though. I’m registered there, and get frequent spam urging me to upgrade to paid levels. The email is written to make you think that if you don’t upgrade you won’t have further access to the site to even read the posts.

They remove your membership 12 months if you haven’t uprgraded to a paid membership. And there are only real benefits if you live in the USA. Otherwise it’s not that good.

I dunno about yours, but even that it seems like the Retouchpro sounds like a good forum, but because of the limitation to unregistered I never care to register and only got there about twice by accident.

I understand people’s reluctance to register, with spam etc the way it is. What I did was to create a special account, which I use for memberships, and let them spam away at that address.

Anonymity can be a curse because it encourages flaming. The big benefit of registration is that people are nice when you know, or potentially know, who they are.

I am not talking about *posting* but *viewing* and I don’t see the spam can do anything by being abble to view Text & Photo.

C’mon Joel – you know they’re just trying to lure you in. You’re right, though, about www.retouchpro.com being one of the more interesting ones. It is very active group with a mixture of professionals and amateurs. I highly recommend registering even just to lurk.

AAnother good group, centered Nikon equipment is www.nikonians.org . Another one, run by a friend, David Cardinal, is
http://www.nikondigital.org . In spite of the name, Dave’s site covers a very broad range of topics in addition to Nikon equipment.

I would encourage other people to post pointers to discussion groups that are of particular interest to photoshop folks.

Re the spam – one of the reasons people hold back on registering is because of the threat of spam, or other misuse of email addresses. One way to deal with that is to create a special account that you use for registering, and ignoring most of the email that comes in.

Personally, I’ve found that most of the groups are pretty good in regard to spam, and I receive less span on that email address than I do on the ones that are exposed on my web page. But the added protection of creating a special email is an option for those that want it.

I knew the retouchpro when it was first starting many years ago, and never care to register.

I am Canon user and I don’t even care to join any Canon specific. I like general with opened mind.

I would encourage other people to post pointers to discussion groups that are of particular interest to photoshop folks.

I too would suggest or I often suggest people to joint some specific group to learn specific thing. But I am often in high horse so I have monitor around 4-5 web groups but don’t register any cuz (1) some is pretty good but I don’t need any extra to register (2) some doesn’t feel being welcome like retouchpro so I never care.

The only one I registered was DPreview but I dropped some years ago when I feel the quality started dropping away, and I haven’t visited in 2-3 years.

I am not talking about Posting Message which I think it should required registration to post, but viewing photo or the contain etc? And that was the reason I registered with DPreview but not other, cuz I can view the photo. Then I registered so I can share with other.
