Are you in the right layer?
Mindy – I don’t know if this will help – if you pop a copy of the image to www.pixentral.com maybe others may have a try?
Anyway – the concept solution in this case is: Yes! You can use more than one selection tool! How supercool and groovy is that!
For example, see the 4 rectangles when a select tool has been -erm- selected?
I forget what most of them are for but 2 important ones for now are: add to selection and/or remove from selection.
When one is selected a small ‘+’ sign or ‘-‘ sign appears appended to the tool/mouse/icon pointer thingy.
So: it is possible to fine tune using any, yes I will repeat that any or even A-N-Y! selection tool can be used to add or subtract from selections.
You are quite correct in the importance of choosing contiguous or not.
Maybe one of these 4 icons/buttons has been triggered and is interfering with your selection workflow?
Here are a few more things. . . I have tried putting a marquee around a flower then tried the magic wand but then it says warning no pixels were seected. Also the flower outline should be filled with pink.
The copy I downloaded from Pixentral let me select any colour with the magic wand; also with Select > Color Range.
Is the file you are working on one layer? Is it a common format (ie PSD, TIF, JPG)?
I can’t reproduce your problem, sorry 🙁

I also can pick any portion independent of the colour.
More details needed.

Hi Mindy – and hmmm
<rests chin in hands>
hmmm hurmph rumph
</rests chin in hands>
After CTRL + J remember to click on background again
The active layer becomes the copied layer if you know what I mean
So the magic wand, when used again, will indeed select a flower or multiple flowers (it depends) but when I tried to CTRL + J it won’s copy coz it’s not using the background image source
I don’t know if this helps at all
I’m trying to use the magic wand tool to select a certain color
Try a zero tolerance.
sounds like you’re on the wrong layer. double check. hide all other layers then make sure you’re on the layer you really want. make sure "auto select layer" is off (click the move tool and look in the option bar).

Mindy – make sure to read posts #1 and #10

I read post 1! I was reinforcing it. 🙂
Yes I am in the right layer! Sometimes you guys say things that make me look like an idiot. I don’t know if you mean it or not but I really don’t appreciate it.
Mindy, maybe you can upload the actual PSD file you’re working on, or email it to someone (since John already tried the image you uploaded and didn’t find any problems with it).
If you like, my email is dot com.
it’s not personal mindy, we don’t know you. we don’t know your level of expertise and we’re stating an obvious solution.
have you tried resetting your prefrences per the faq?
I apologise to you Mindy – if my post generated any offense I would like to reassure you none is meant.
Just the other day Photoshop give me a notice about not enough memory. I realised afterwards that I was resizing a crop to 2048 inches rather than pixels.
I mention this merely to show that I am very prone to error anyway…
That’s okay. . . . . it’s just that I’m learning photoshop completely on my own (I would say I’m an intermediate/advanced beginner) and it’s just that sometimes someone might say something that was not meant to be sarcastic but unfortunately I took it the wrong way. So I apologize for misinterrupting your message. Mindy
Mindy, I got the file and it seems to be okay, I was able to select the colors. Have you tried delete/reset Photoshop preferences? Have you tried using the magic wand on other images, and how does it behave?

no problem. you just need to get yerself a "Flame Retardant Suit" before going online! 🙂
Resetting the preference worked! Thanks 🙂
cool beans mindy. 🙂 come for the fix, stay to learn cool new things! (i never left when i wandered in about 5 years ago!!! <g>)
hopefully see you around, sorry about any misunderstanding,
dave
I wonder what it is about preferences that goes bad so often…
one thing we’ve been told is, they’re written as ps is closing down so if a user exits improperly the file can be left "open" in an inconsistant state.
One other thing to take in mind is the size of the eyedropper: if you set it to 5 by 5 pixels, it will also affect the magic wand… (but as to select the whole image, it is another story…)
It can be quite unsettling when preferences go off or a bit skewed and happened to me when I installed a tablet (in the computer I mean)
Things went a bit unpredicatable. Anyway, thanks to this site I reset prefs and things ran like they did before
