Hi all,

I’m running a PC with Pentium 4, win xp, 2 Gb ram, 2 hard drives (C drive has over 75Gb space, F drive over 250Gb space). I’ve been using CS3 Extended for quite a while…very happy with it. I thought I’d download the CS4 Extended trial to see if I like it. It installed fine and I made sure enough RAM is allocated (65%:1000MB). After opening an image and applying a filter or other edits I get an application error message. These error messages also appear on exiting the program. Here’s one such error…the others are similar but with different numbers.

The instruction at 0x1d854b6b referenced memory at 0xffce8b95. The memory could not be "read". Click ok to terminate the program. Click on cancel to debug the program.

Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. I don’t want to pay for an upgrade if the program is unstable (assuming that it’s the program, a setting or my PC). I should mention that my video is onboard and doesn’t support the open GL2/shadow.

Many thanks,

Paul B

Forgot to mention that no such errors occur with myCS4 trial on my Toshiba M110 satellite laptop.

run a memory test you could have a faulty stick of ram

It sounds as if programs are trying to write to the same area of memory. Upgrade your video driver.
If that does not work turn off unnecessary background programs. Candidates include anything associated with Itunes, antivirus, all the applets at the bottom right corner of your start bar.

It could be but it’s hard to agree or disagree when can’t get what you response to <bg>

Thank you all for replying. I will run the memory test as suggested. There is no antivirus on the computer I use for Photoshop (not connected to the internet). I’ll also look at the background programs running. I checked for the latest driver…intel 82865G..(my version is the latest, but as it came out in 2005 it’s pretty "old" by today’s standard). I don’t get any such error message with CS3. So it seems strange to me. As previously mentioned there are no problems running CS4 on my Toshiba laptop.

Most likely you are running two monitors on a single CPU display card… Or, have a second monitor enabled but don’t have it in use on a single CPU card.

You might not realise this but CS4 is enabled for 3GL performance and works best with really high performance, multi CPU display cards used by gamers.

I’d also suggest you set your Windows swap file to a single fixed size on a fast drive not being used by either Photoshop or any programs.

The CS4 trial is not CS4. It has a few "features" disabled that do not come alive until you register and activate it. One of those (I suspect) is the high performance video capabilities although on a Pentium 4 (single core) you might not notice any difference. You certainly will notice a difference if you try to run 2 monitors from an on-board display chip.

I only have one monitor.

I will be updating my PC sometime this year.

I’ll look into this…thank you.

It is good of you to join us here. May I ask – does not cs4 look to the graphics card only for 3D rendering at this time?

I have not seen it hit the graphics card for anything else, but I admit that I am not fully competent in that area.

TIA!

I’ve been here for 10 years John. I’ve found less and less to contribute so if you arrived in the last few years, you probably don’t recognise me.

If you try to run 2 monitors on a single CPU graphics card, CS4 will break up the shape of some of it’s tools and make them almost unusable at higher sizes, often stalling the program altogether. My guess is that if using 2 monitors on a single CPU card does this much interference, the program does a lot more than just use the engine for 3D rendering.

Only Adobe know exactly what their new graphics engine actually does but it certainly makes rendering photographic images after using some tools and plug-ins a heck of a lot faster.

My PC most definitely runs PS CS4 at least 30% faster after I followed Adobe’s advise and installed an unbelievably expensive "G-Force" card they recommended. I had to upgrade the power supply to handle the card’s demands but I don’t look back on the decision.

There was a discussion going in the Adobe forums last year about the benefit (or not) of their new graphics engine. Few people then had a clue it actually needed a gamers card to run fast. I got my advise from Adobe themselves. Why don’t you send them an e-mail and get the right information straight off?

It also uses the graphics card for zooming. The result is that the image now looks good at any zoom percentage, in CS3 only 25%, 50% and 100% looked good.

Your word is good with me. No need to contact Adobe.

I use a Power Mac, and it is at the office, so I’ll check the graphics card on Monday. It might be helpful to find a benchmark by which we could compare performance on our actual platforms.

Thats not strictly true. A card which has DDR3 ram is quite adequate to run 3GL performance. My card is only 256Mb. Another thing is the update 11,0,1 makes things work better.
