Adding information to a layer created from selection

I’m not sure how to ask this question clearly and concisely. Basically, I need to know how best to "add to" a selection that has already been assigned to a new layer. For example, during photo restoration I create a layer for each individual part of the image that needs work. I make the selection on the Background Copy layer, then "Ctrl-J" that selection to its own layer. Oftentimes, as I build up my layers and begin working, I discover that I need information from another layer, or perhaps my selection missed a specific part of the image that needed to be part of that selection, or it includes something that I don’t want on that layer or I want to remain on the Background Copy layer. Certainly, the best solution is to be more careful/accurate in my original selection and layer creation, but this type of thing does happen, and I’d like to know what my options are from that point.

Thank you.
