Hi,

I’m working on a Windows XP computer, and I’m using Adobe Photoshop 7.0, Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Distiller 5.0.

I need to import an image into PageMaker. The image is a b&w logo. The logo consists mainly of a big white circle outlined in black, with a transparent background around the circle. The inner white part of the circle doesn’t need to be transparent. I export the image out of Photoshop using the "Export Transparent Image" feature. In Photoshop the image looks the way I need it to look – the logo is B&W, and only the space surrounding the circle is transparent. However, when I import the image into PageMaker, everything that was white is transparent, including the inside of the circle. What am I doing wrong?

Also, if I try to export the document to PDF form, it bombs. (I was hoping the image might look right in PDF form).

I have tried all variations of saving the image in Photoshop. I just don’t know what else to do. Thanks!

What format is the image? It sounds like a gif. In a GIF, the image is made transparent by selecting a color to be transparent (the matte). If you choose white, then it all becomes transparent. This works, because in PageMaker the paper is white, so your central transparent areas will appear okay when printed. (Unless you are printing on colored paper, and even then the effect is the same, because printers normally cannot print white.)

I suggest you look at using Tiff format with a clipping mask to provide transparency. It will work the way you want it to.

Julia,

From Export Transparent Wizard select "My image is on a transparent background">"For Print">

That will create an EPS with clipping path. Place this in PageMaker. If it does not appear transparent, rotate in PM by 0.1 deg.
