We have discovered several installation issues with CS2 that Adobe phone support and knowledgebase has failed to help us with.

1. We have no Camera raw support. When going to open a camera raw file we get the following error message… "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." Looking at the list of plug-ins there is no Camera Raw 3.0 loaded in Photoshop.

2. Random error messages…
A. "Adobe Photoshop Unable to continue because of a hardware or system error. Sorry, but this error is unrecoverable."
B. "Adobe Photoshop Could not synchronize the color settings because the color settings file could not be found."
C. "Adobe Bridge Unable to launch the Adobe Updater application. Please verify that it is installed properly. Erro Code: 2"

3. In Adobe Photoshop under the help menu the following are grayed out. Registration…
Activate…
Transfer Activation…
Updates…

4. We have uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Photoshop CS2 several times trying to get it to install correctly. There are no error messages at any point during the installation process.

For reference we have tried the following Adobe online documents… 329945 Error "Could not complete your request…" 331405 Manually remove Adobe Photoshop CS2 (Windows)

And we have worked with several Adobe support people over the last week on the phone. During which we discovered that every time Adobe Photoshop CS2 installs it places Camera Raw.8BI in the following folder: “C:\WINDOWS\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS2\File Formats”. Talking to support and looking at Adobe online it appears that Camera Raw.8BI should be located at the following location: “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS2\File Formats”

Computer specifications…
Windows XP Home SP2
2.66 GHz P4
768 MB Ram
Minimal other installed items (newer machine)

Is there any other way to get help? I feel the SEVERAL hours on the phone with Adobe installation support with several different people has eaten more than enough time already.

This sounds like you have a bad install.

Since you’ve already tried to reinstall, there could be a permissions problem preventing the installer from placing certain files, or a problem with your registry guiding thigns to the wrong location (which is what it looks like).

And you really need to walk through this with Adobe Support.

We have called Adobe a few more times this week but they have not been able to help. Yesterday was the most promising when we suggested going to CS until they work out the CS2 problems. They seemed open to that.

Additional problems we found after we worked with Photoshop CS2 more are…

Opening a PSD created in Photoshop 7.0: We get the following error message… "Adobe Photoshop Could not complete your request because the file could not be found."

and

Type Tool: When trying to use the type tool we get the following message with CS2… "Adobe Photoshop Could not use the type tool because the file could not be found."

File location: After installing and uninstalling, Photoshop CS2 keeps installing some common files to "C:\windows\program files\common\adobe" instead of "C:\program files\common\adobe" Can any one tell me if they have a working install of Photoshop CS2 AND some of the common files are installed in the "C:\WINDOWS\program files\common\adobe"?

Thanks for any help,

Rodney

The installation to Windows/program files is a clue – the installer is very confused.

Talked to Adobe again yesterday, 5/16/05. They could not give us a reason for the "C:\windows\program files\common\adobe". We have two machines both Windows XP SP2 and both are having problems (one more than the other). The tech did admit that the MSI installer seams to be causing the problems. When I asked him if Adobe is using the new MSI ver. 3 installer or MSI ver. 2 the phone tech did not know. He was going to do some research and call us back.

The Adobe Photoshop CS2 CD-ROM has two MSI setup files included with it, all MSI installed programs have these files. They are used to install MSI if the Setup.exe finds the version of MSI setup is older than needed. Looking at the file version of these two installers it is not apparent what version of MSI Adobe installed or is using. Since this is a relatively clean machine (and we haven’t installed anything for some time) I don’t think our machine has used the new MSI installer yet. What version of MSI is Adobe now using with CS2?

Thanks again for the help,

Rodney

FYI: Norton Antivirus and Trend Micro (online House call version) have found no viruses or spy ware. Both Antiviruses were NOT running during the installation of CS2. Also, after much time trying to trouble shoot CS2, we tried installing other programs like Adobe Acrobat, it installed and worked with no problems, but CS2 will not install correctly.
