My daughter brought down her H/P laptop and wants to have me show her how to edit some photographs. I’d like to connect my Samsung SyncMaster 2253lw to the laptop and view on that screen, but I can’t get it to display.

I plugged my screen into the H/P and went to Control
Panel>Display>Settings> and tried to figure out how to view on the secondary screen, but I can’t figure it out.

What am I doing wrong?

I don’t think this is the best forum for such a question. I should be trying Samsung or HP newsgroups.

It could be a good forum in which to ask. Many Photoshop users use two monitors.

Also, I’m subscribed to this group for other reasons, and I don’t want to add another group to my list.

As with -=all=- laptops, there’s a function key lower left that adds commands to the keyboard. Look for a numeric key with a small rectangle.

That should switch the output of the computer to the display.

Of course, it IS covered in the MANUAL and usually in the "HP Guide" Icon.

Thanks. I’ll try that tomorrow. She took the laptop and is visiting with friends tonight.

Wouldn’t know where to find it. I don’t own a laptop.

You wouldn’t know how to go to the manufacturers site and read/download the docs? How fucking stupid are you?

I figured if I posted the question here that you would read it and go out of your way to reply with helpful instructions as you usually do. I consider you to be my own personal help desk, Voivod.

Thanks for playing.

One of the few advantages of Vista is that it will autosense a secondary monitor and adjust output accordingly.
If your laptop has Vista and is not autosensing the secondary monitor then right click on the desktop/personalize/display settings. In XP right click on the desktop, left click on properties, click settings tab, advanced.
Depending on the graphics system and its driver you will have to find the settings for either cloning the desktop output or shifting it entirely to the external monitor. You may have to adjust the resolution and refresh rate to suit the external monitor. If it is an LCD panel the best image will require knowing the native resolution of the panel.

No way. Never.

Just got through hooking it up. Works fine. It was a frustrating experience, though, because I expected a *second* view of what I was seeing on the laptop. Not so. What I was seeing was an *extension* of what was on the laptop’s screen. Once I figured out that I needed to grab the image on the laptop screen and move it into place on the larger monitor, it all came together. Now I have the image (photograph) filling the large monitor screen and the palettes on the laptop screen.
