The samples folder:
The samples folder needs complete consideration. Some good files disappear, some really bad ones still there. In photoshop 4 and 5 I remember there were awesome teaching samples on composing that we didn’t see in newer versions.

For educational reasons
Support a Raw file sample in the samples folder.
Name samples as their function. Some files are just there without a clue of their function until you open and check their layer compos for example or channels maybe!. This isn’t a replace for the instructor own class files, but they go to have a reason for being there.

The layers palette
The layer palette is the most used tool in whole photoshop, it build a way of thinking and how you design, I have to say it I’m having big time trying to figure it up, I miss the link column
This is slowing my work big time, having troubles moving and deleting nested layer groups (sets), some commands changed their names. Selecting layer are manual than it should.

It will certainly take me a long time to get used to the CS 2 layer palette. The layer palette will definitely find major enhancement in version 10, if not getting the old settings back. I have to say it the layer palette is a complete thing now.

Photoshop is getting smarter
Smart blur
Smart sharpen
Smart objects
Smart guides

With the presence of enhanced photoshop
The bridge
The help center
Stock photos
32-bit HDR editing
additional 16-bit tasks
Photoshop is an application that needs a real power, make sure you read system requirements by Adobe.

Image Ready
Is the sleeping beauty, they haven’t adjust much in it as it seems to have a new project, we might not see IR again, this tiny program is have always lived in the shadow of his brother.

Bottom line
Since the announcement of the Adobe Macromedia thing, it was clear that the change of the suite icons should’ve been a hint, and with all the respect, this is the less impressing version of photoshop ever released, with all the new enhancements it absolutely deserves the name of the filter version.

Huh?

There are RAW samples in the samples folder.

And your bottom line really doesn’t make sense.

I seem to share the lack of a Raw file like others (since version7).

As to if it makes sense or not Chris this is as titled a personal notes, I tend to find ver 6 the most major upgrade, maybe that’s why Adobe released 5.5 before it.

Adobe could have waited more than the usual 18 month period for this release to come up with more powerful version, after all as a great artist once said its all about polishing a chrome.

I’m using CS2 in my daily job, I got nothing against it, I’m just too excited about my addiction.

I’ll look forward CS 3 or what ever the name will be.

Ammar:

I’m an instructor too and I have instructional files from way back from version 4. If you or your IT department have access to the original install disks you can go and recover the goodies and sample folders and burn them to disk to use for instructional purposes. We have an archive from version 5 through CS. We have licenses for the point products, which helps as the Educational point products include the goodies folder with the educational version where the full suite product does not.

Personally I think this is a great update, I just wish as an instructor we had more weeks in the semester to teach this program. For a great resource site check out the Adobe Education site (click on the Solutions tab on the Adobe main page and then click Education)

Thank you Christine for the well thoughtout reply.

Indeed you gave a solution to common problem, i appriciate it. I’m already teaching a CS 2 class, the first in my country, a lot of students are so excited about it that i have 11 of them, i promiced them to keep them updated as soon as the CIB for CS2 released, meanwhile i’m using Adobe’s PDF, the user guide, and as pointed the Educational site.

Thanks for the reply.

As to the RAW files, if you don’t have a camera that produces RAW files, why do you need them and where do you think you’re going to get them?

RAW files are simply the data from the sensor with no alterations. Each camera maker has invented their own version, but hopefully they’ll soon adopt the DNG format.

"Why do you need them?"
For teaching purposes mainly.

"Where do you think you’re going to get them?" From Adobe.

Ammar, do you mean Photoshop raw files, not raw files coming from a digital camera?
