When using any brush tools or clone tool, the curor movement is not smooth when the info pallate is open. The cursor movement will lag and then jump. Especially noticable during fast movements. Using a Logitech MX 500 mouse and ATI Fire GL 8800 128 mb, both with latest drivers. I do not have this problem when using similar tools in other graphics programs and the movement is fine if I close the info pallete. The movement is erratic enough to render the tools useless for precision work. I never saw anything like this in PS7. Am I missing some new setting?

No, but some people have this problem and some don’t.
We suspect it’s yet another video card driver issue.

I’m not sure what to make from your response. I’m using the latest drivers that are approved to be used with every heavy duty graphics program in the book and yet the only program that I’m having trouble with is Photoshop CS2. Does this mean that you will look into the problem on your end or are we supposed to purchase new video cards. I don’t recall seeing a published list of approved video cards for PC CS2.

Paul,

Chris said "We suspect it’s yet another video card driver issue."

Should that prove to be the case it would be up to the vid.card manufacturer to fix their driver.

Just because a driver works with other applications, it doesn’t mean there is nothing wrong with it. Different applications use different API’s and a good driver should perform correctly with all of them.

Len,

I can certainly appreciate the fact that video drivers can have problems, however, the info palette and these brushes have been around for a number of versions and have seemed to function correctly. Chris’s response indicates that I’m not the only one having this problem, so what has changed? Having done a little software development myself, I can also appreciate the seemingly infinite difficulties in making software changes. For now, I’ll wait and see. From some of the other posts, I suspect there are problems on Abobe’s end.

Len and Chris, Thank you for your response.

We are looking into it – but we don’t know where the problem is yet (and so far we can’t reproduce this one).

Even minor changes (moving an icon over by 1 pixel) can sometimes trigger different behavior in the video driver (we’ve seen it before).

Chris,

Thanks for the response. For me, my workstation is not cluttered with a lot of apps so when I made the decision to upgrade to CS2 PhotoShop, Indesign, Illustrator ( individual packages ) I did like I always do. Back up all my data, delete all partitions and reinstall. Everything went on clean Win2k serivice pack 4 ( I have the OEM disk with the service pack on it) MS Office XP Professional ( I leave off FrontPage), Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Monaco Optix color..that’s it. This computer is not on the net so no virus software and one printer HP LaserJet 4Mplus as all my stuff is printed elseware. I have one gig of Ram with an AMD 2800+, two hard drives with a 15 gig swap partition for PhotoShop on the second physical drive, Windows swap file is on C: set at 3072/3072. Video card is a ATI FireGL 128 mb card with latest driver. Same OS, Drivers, Office XP with Photoshop 7, Indesign 2, Illustrator CS ran just fine and no info palette issues. So for me, the only thing that changed was the new Adobe software. My feeling is that it is not a video issue, its a processor/resource issue. Is the info palette now being used to provide numbers for something else? If I move the cursor very slowly, it’s ok. It’s like it’s doing something else in the background that it didn’t do before.

Again, I appeciate your response.

Which means it’s either a bug in the app, or something in the video card or it’s driver (most likely).

The info palette can be used to display status information as well as the older info data. But the drawing code really hasn’t changed since CS.

I wouldn’t know, the last Photoshop version I had was 7, and that worked very well, never had a problem and I did a lot of work in it.

This is really wierd, but I installed my Wacom Intuos 6×8 tablet (latest driver) and the brush problem went away. Whatever it did, it fixed everything. The Wacom tablet is working correctly and the Logitech mouse is working correctly. I guess they like playing together. My problem is solved.

I noticed the shaded tabs are somewhat slow to draw on my machine, and I noticed the info palette slowing things down a bit, too.

I just upgraded my video drivers to the latest NVidia TNT/GeForce today and it’s still a little slow.

ATI sent me a response and I filed a report with them using their report utility. So we’ll see what they say.
