I have a photo with someone whose teeth appear off. Does anyone know how to make the illusion of whiter teeth naturally? Thank you in advance.

Mary,
There’s a number of ways to do that. First, and quickest, is to just use the Dodge Tool and lighten the teeth. If you need something more accurate then select the teeth and pick the Hue/Saturation Tool. In the drop down menu select yellow and then move the slider all the way to the left.

Here’s a more involved approach with an effective, natural result: < http://fotofects.com/v2/adobe-photoshop/photo-retouching/whi tening-teeth.html>

Kudos to Thomas Ireland who first mentioned it in another similar thread.

Try Denny Tang for a slightly more complicated way?

As well as quick, you want the result to look natural.

First select the teeth (trace around the inside of the lips with the marquee tool), feather by one or two pixels, then press Ctrl+J. this will copy them onto a new layer where they will sit smiling down on you.

Grab the Dodge tool and set the Brush to a medium softness, the Range to Shadows and the Exposure to 5%. Now start performing a scale and polish.

Vary the brush size to suit the individual area of the teeth. The aim is to lighten the darker (stained or shadowed) areas without unduly lightening the highlights – hence the ‘Shadows’ setting.

Once the teeth are an even colour, zoom out to gain an overall impression of your work. If the teeth look too yellow go Ctrl+U for the Hue/Saturation dialogue, then Ctrl+2 to select ‘Yellows’ in the Edit drop-down box. Now reduce the Saturation slider.

Don’t overdo it. Nothing looks worse than "Photoshopped" teeth (same goes for the whites of the eyes). If you think you need to reduce the effect for a more natural result, just reduce the opacity of the top (teeth) layer before flattening.

Keep Smiling!

Chris.
