I have just bought an Acer Travelmate 8104 and when I start up CS2 the whole thing freezes and the cpu loading is 100%.

It works fine on my main PC and I have installed new drivers for the ATI Radian X700 graphics adaptor and re set prefs and re installed CS2 but I can not cure the problem.

CS and elements 3 run fine.

Grateful for any help sorting out my laptop.

Regards,
Ken

When does it freeze?

Does the whole machine lockup, or just Photoshop?

How many fonts do you have installed?

Hi Chris,

When it has loaded and I click on any menu item the menus will disappear and if I look at task manager and view process I see photoshop.exe using 99% of CPU time. If I end the process all is well with XP pro so the operating system has not been brought down.

As far as fonts are concerned the machine is new today and will only have fonts that came with windows and any that CS CS2 and elements 3. the only other software I have installed is Office 2000 pro, Norton 2005 and a few Acer utilities that were already loaded.

It really looked like a driver problem to me but I have loaded the latest on from the Acer site, together with the latest chipset drivers.

I am very happy to be able to work with you on this problem Chris so please let me know what testing you would like me to do. By the way this machine has a Pentium M 760, a 915 chipset and 1 gig DDR 2 memory.

CS2 is running very well on my old desktop but the laptop is going to be used when I visit camera clubs to demo the products. This is why I have CS2 and elements 3 on it. My old Sony has seen better day and it is such a hassle to take the tower with me. 🙂

Best regards,
Ken

Yes, that does sound like a bad video driver.

But it could also be due to a utility program that modifies menus or other UI elements.

Have you tried using the ATI drivers instead of the Acer version of the drivers (which are usually behind a bit)?

And this could still be related to fonts – most likely a corrupt font.

Hi Chris,

I looked on the ATI site for new drivers but they don’t list them for notebooks. Instead you are referred to the manufacturers site, which is where I got the drivers I am using.

Can you give me a clue as to where I can get info on checking for corrupt fonts please?

I started bridge on its own and clicked on an image and it started CS2 and the image was displayed. The curser appeared as a + sign but only over the image. If I moved it of the image it was not displayed. Looking in task manager under applications and processes Photoshop appears twice. Under processes one appearance show cpu loading of 99% and the other shows 0%. When they are deleted windows behaves normal again. CS buy the way is working fine.

Hope all I have given you relevant info that will enable you to help me further.

Best regards,
Ken

Mathias Vejerslev, "Photoshop stops loading at fontlisting." #, 12 Dec 2003 1:05 pm </cgi-bin/webx?50> might help with fonts.

Hi Chris,

I spoke to Acer support today and ask them if they could download a trial version of CS2 and try to run it on a TravelMate 8104 but they just said that they don’t support third party software and that it must be an Adobe Problem as it runs CS ok. They even tried to tell me it would be illegal to run the trial as they are a company and not an individual.

As far as I am concerned problems happen and I am happy to work with anyone who has a genuine interest in helping me to solve the problem and only Adobe seem will to do this so thank you very much,

I did a clean restore this afternoon without enabling the wireless lan or installing Norton and still got the same problem but image ready runs fine as does bridge.

I would be so grateful if anyone with the same laptop as me could say if CS2 works. If anyone without CS2 would be willing to give the trial version a try for me that would be wonderful.

Not sure where I go from here except that my next Laptop may well not be an Acer. Any company can have problems with products but what counts is the support the customer get to help resolve them

Best Regards,
Ken
