Hi Everybody, Especially Mike Russell,

It’s been a long long time since I was here. From the (g)old friends in Photoshop groups I can see Mike Russell only. I think that all people in this group owe him an acknowledgement for all the help he offers.

For those who don’t know about Mike I say that he started as an authority in tweaking with Curves. Everyone in PS ng’s, I am no exception, were really waiting for his posts on Curves.

I also miss my old dear friend Janee Aronoff (Janee). From other names I still remember (though he is not a friend of mine) is Franklin (tacit.r). I notice that he abandoned PS groups. He was of a great help.

I also remember RossF whom I still don’t know his real name. He was a real help machine and followed up the group relentlessly. Many (g)old contributors to PS ng’s.

Please, Mike help me remember them. Yes, I also remembered that bearded old guy: MikeC. He also vanished! He was a great designer and source of sense of humor.

For those whom I didn’t remember, the forgotten soldiers, please pardon me.

I hope people here would remind me. I wish we have a list of these gurus with their real names. I hate nicks, but I respect other’s privacy. Regards to you all, experts and newbies.

If you were that close with Janee, you might contact her on her web site. And be reminded there’s been a death and a new guy.

I still remember (though he is not a friend of mine) is Franklin (tacit.r). I notice that he abandoned PS groups. He was of a great help.

Yes, I agree. Great guy. One of the few who knew about CMYK.

I also remember RossF whom I still don’t know his real name. He was a real help machine and followed up the group relentlessly. Many (g)old contributors to PS ng’s.

Ross, too. He couldn’t resist tangling with Mike C. Very amusing.

Please, Mike help me remember them. Yes, I also remembered that bearded old guy: MikeC. He also vanished! He was a great designer and source of sense of humor.

Re Mike Christie, be careful what you wish for, LOL. Talented, but with many carefully pointed sharp edges aimed at (what he calls) silly people.

For those whom I didn’t remember, the forgotten soldiers, please pardon me.

Here are some more that I remember: Hecate, Katwoman, flowerpot, Dorothy Combs, and I’m sure there are still more. Each of these people, with the probable exception, sadly, of Hecate, are off on other groups, still contributing.

It’s not the people that are gone, so much, as that Usenet itself is like a slowly fading lamp. It still gives good light. Speaking for myself, I’ll be around, most likely, until it goes out. Then, it’s time to rub our eyes, as if Usenet were a dream, and waken to the lustrous glow of places like www.dgrin.com , www.retouchpro.com, www.flickr.com, and other web sites where you can actually (imagine) talk about photographs instead of about words.

Oh, and www.curvemeister.com/gallery is spinning up a new set of curvemeister challenges – check it out!

On her website she started a community but discontinued. You know that she was a co-author of some PS7 book. She is a very humble and helpful person. I hope that she is still creative as she always was.

Very nice what u described usenet. Yes. Someday this will happen. At least I periodically visit retouchpro.com, and your website’s community. One other reason why are we not feeling that excitement maybe because of fact that PS has reached it’s peak (I hope it is not Dante’s peak)! (Do you remember that movie of Pierse Brosnan)?

Hecate DIED?? oh I do miss her on here
very informed and one of the only other females
LOL I see that darn KatWoman everyday 😉

I joined the PS forum but did not enjoy the interface- I prefer to see newsfeed in my email client
and the fragmentation and sheer amount of the topics was not to my liking

retouch pro too has so many threads- I didn’t join but occasionally peek at it
I am on flickr but don’t get much feedback on there
some of the talent is amazing but most often very amatuerish, snapshots and porns
some sex weirdos on there favorited my pictures –
mostly I joined to have a place to put photos under discussion here www.flickr.com/KW-Retouch

Johan? wasn’t he here a lot? there used to be a regular bunch most seem to have gone
but so have the trolls (yay)
remember that nut who used to talk to his own posts?

Yes, now that we’re below the radar, perhaps this will turn into the nice group that I joined years ago.

remember that nut who used to talk to his own posts?

Nuff said, if it’s who I think you mean. Starts with a J.

and that Canada guy? forgot his name was making a seed and plant image using smart objects name with a K?

Not sure who that is. If their nick started with a K, though, they were probably someone good.

Re Hecate – I’m not sure that she died, but I made some effort to find any references to her and for a variety of reasons I decided that she may have died. OTOH, I like to think that I’m wrong. Perhaps she just got fed up with the way she was being treated here, and left for greener pastures.

It does make me think what a transitive existence we have on this earth, and specifically on the Internet, with no final word on what happens to any of us.

Timo Autiokari – his website is under construction at the moment at http://www.aim-dtp.net/ . Actually I found his ideas and procedures very interesting, particularly because his theories – whether valid or not – were illustrated always with actual images. This carries a lot of weight with me. He also took a lot of verbal abuse here, and never responded to it, going straight ahead with whatever the technical issue at hand was. —

Wasn’t he the one who took issue with the way Adobe applied gamma correction to images? His ideas may have been credible, but they quickly got over my head so that I for one was unable to follow. IIRC, Chris Cox disagreed vehemently with most of the concepts he raised.

All true. Chris Cox can be very free with his disdain when he feels the occasion warrants it. Timo was, and is, an interesting if iconoclastic person, advocating use of non-gamma encoded images, and he ruffled feathers in the process. He is in good company.

A number of people objected to using gamma encoded images in the first place. Life would have been better had they succeeded. Their failure to prevent this is the reason that RGB images change hue when you apply changes using the RGB master curve, and why color fringes are so easy to come by when you manipulate an RGB image in Photoshop.

It’s an interesting topic that is dealt with very nicely in a paper by one of the greats, Alvy Ray Smith: http://www.alvyray.com/Memos/7_alpha.pdf

Alvy and his team at ILM invented, designed, and implemented a lot of the code that Photoshop 1.0 was based on. Things like the alpha channel, the HSB color space, and the compositing operations used for layers. I highly recommend taking a tour of his web page www.alvyray.com . —

Very Interesting Discussion on Gamma.
When you consider how many different operations a light produced signal has to go thru from camera sensor, sRGB color gamut, white balance filtering, A/D converter, Bayer pattern algorithms, anti aliasing, jpeg compression, RGB to CMYK conversions for printing, ink and paper characteristics etc., it is absolutely AMAZING that we can get prints that look anything like the original image.

Chris has a PhD in "defending entrenched positions".

Also a pretty nice guy in the everyday sense. I once asked for some clarification of one of his posts and he promptly emailed me a detailed explanation of the whole matter that must have taken a good while to compose. Not everyone would take the time to bother with questions from a relative newbie.

Yeah, he was quite adament in his stance, but never stooped to ad homonim even when some others treated him badly. Right or wrong, he undertook to present his ideas with class, IMHO.
