After making a selection against a black background I use quick mask to fine tune the edges. Since the background is black, it is very difficult for me to see whether my brushes are accurately separating the selection from the background. Is there a way to get around this? Thanks.

Click on the quickmask in the channels palette and a dialog will pop up allowing you to set the color and opacity. Change it to something more visible.
