I’m trying to use the background eraser to edit a picture prior to making a mask, but when I select the tool and (trying almost any seting) it just seems to smear various colors about. Certainly doesn’t look like anything I see in the books I have. I understand it might have to do with varying colors, but I’m trying to mask out a tree and the sky behind is all blue. Maybe it’s not a good tool for this? I’ve got PS 5.5 and XP Pro SP2. Would it be worth upgrading to CS2?

Thanks – Roger

As a follow-up, I just checked with a co-worker, who uses PS 7.0, and it works the way I’d expect it to on his. Any suggestions would be appreciated… even to say "upgrade" (I’m really pushing for the upgrade here… in case you didn’t notice).

Thanks – Roger

Roger: I guarantee if you spend your moneypenny on the the upgrade, you’ll be stirred and definitely not shaken!

As for your existing problem. You have a license to kill the Preferences file (as per the FAQs). This often cures ‘strange behavior’ of some tools.

You by chance don’t have the tool directly below the Background Eraser Tool—the Smudge Tool—accidentally selected do you??

Peadge 🙂
