CS2 Problems

I have processed 562 scanned TIFF files with a WinXP machine. The editing steps were, acquire image from Bridge, the editing tools were all or some of Spot Healing Brush, Curves, Red Eye Removal, Color Replacement, and Smart Sharpen. Then save/close with shift/ctrl/W. I have encountered the following serious problems:

LOST FILES
56 times when trying to save/close, the following error message was displayed:

Could not save "file name" because the file is already in use or was left open.

Sometimes a work around was to try "Save As", but most of the time nothing worked except to close the file. In all cases, a file like "~ps47.tmp" was written to the disk.

When :Save As" worked, the original edited file was also written to the disk. When "Save As" didn’t work, the original file was lost.

This is a real dangerous problem.

BRIDGE LOSING FOCUS
Many, many times, when returning to Bridge from PS using shift/ctrl/W the original selected file was no longer highlighted. This is a terrible inconvenience.

BRIDGE NOT MAKING THUMBNAILS
Bridge was first used for this job when there were 532 files in the folder. Bridge made thumbnails for those file as expected.

Later I added 30 files to the folder. Bridge would not make thumbnails for these added files. Other programs, including My Computer, made thumbnails just fine. The issue is that Bridge didn’t even try to make the thumbnails.

The files could be loaded into Photoshop and edited just fine.

Finally, I transferred the 30 files to another folder and Bridge made thumbnails for them just fine.

RED EYE REMOVAL ERRATIC
The new Red Eye Removal tool works fine is some cases, but not at all in other cases, and terrible in some cases. When it was terrible, it put a dark cast all over the eye. I had to return to the Color Removal tool for most images.

CONCLUSION
Unless these problems can be corrected, CS2 is not stable enough for me. Hopefully, there will be an update very soon. I really don’t want to go back to CS.

Please try to keep the Bridge problems posted in the Bridge forum (where the Bridge folks are much more likely to read them).

Red Eye removal – we need to get some sample files where it doesn’t work. The only cases we know where it fails are green eye from animals.

Thanks Chris, but I’ve had more problems with CS2, and I just don’t have time to trouble shoot then. It’s back to CS for me. I’ll send CS2 back and wait for a more mature product.

Thanks.

I’ll send CS2 back and wait for a more mature product.

99.9% of us are enjoying the wonderful new features in this mature product.

The other 0.01% are busy updating their graphics cards and setting up their systems properly.

And we are all awaiting the dot release update to the Bridge. (Which as far as I can gather will be any day now).

Stick with it Wil. It’s well worth a little effort.

Wil, I too have a similar problem when saving files. I frequently get the "file name" because the file is already in use or was left open" error message. I just keep hitting the Ctrl+S key and it finally works. This is very sporadic but troublesome. I won’t give up on CS2 thought. So far though I haven’t lost any images. That would be disastrous.

Wesley,

I have lost files with this problem. I was lucky to have identical files in another folder. Be very careful because it is possible to lose the file, or at least have it changed to a *.tmp file.

I have now found that the *.tmp file can be re-named to *.tif and PS will open it, but it won’t include some of the editing.

I’m beginning to suspect that it has something to do with Smart Sharpening. I use the advanced version of it which takes a few seconds to run. I suspect that it creates a .tmp file on disk during the process and then sometimes gets corrupted. Any way, this situation is unacceptable.

I found that if I got the mesage that the file was open or in use, I just go to the Bridge and look at another file. Then I go to save the file I was originally working on, and it saves with no fuss.

It must be something to do with the Bridge. A minor inconvienience.

Could it be the fact that the file is highlighted, and is thus being previewed, in Bridge, that is causing the "file can’t be saved; in use" error?

Bridge is very possessive.

I was trying again and again to rename a folder, without success, before I realised that it was still open in Bridge (minimised), which kept resetting it to Read Only despite my best efforts to unlock it.

Well, I’ve disproved my theory; I have opened a file in Bridge, leaving it also previewed in Bridge, and I was able to save it without problems.
