this is about PS 7.0 on win xp2 P4 2.8 GHz, 1 Gig RAM. It was working fine until the last automatic update toward the end of last week. Today is the first time I’ve tried to use it since. It loads but when I try to open a new file PS either disappears or brings up a windows box that says PS encountered an error and had to close. These are the details I could copy:

AppName: photoshop.exe AppVer: 7.0.0.0 ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0001888f

There used to be a bug report page but I can’t find it… Any help would be appreciated…

Automatic update to what? Windows?

Have you tried trashing your prefs? Have you downloaded and installed the 7.0.1 update?

Photoshop 7.0 looks for updates when it starts. It updates itself whenever it finds something new. If a windows update broke PS I’d complain to Microsoft. This was an Adobe update to PS. But I’ll try your suggestions. BTW, it will successfully "open recent" from the file menu, but in "open…" it fails – sometimes right after clicking on "open", sometimes after moving through the directory tree.

There’s nothing new for Photoshop 7.0 and there hasn’t been in years. I don’t have 7.0 installed anymore but there’s somewhere to set it to never check for updates.

Too late for that! I had to leave it on in hopes they’d fix it. From now on Adobe might want to include version checking in their install routine.

One interesting tidbit. Tonight I opened PS, it autoupdated, I closed it, reopened and it still didn’t work (dissappeared after clicking on a file to open). Giving up, I ordered CS2. Financially more than I could handle, but oh well. Then this evening I opened PS again and to my surprise it worked fine. Guess they figured out how to tell if we’ve ordered the upgrade and if so the s/w has a switch which lets it work again. Very clever! 😉
