I have a photo with a white background. I would like to make the white transparent. How do I do this. I am new to photoshop and cannot figure out the explanation in the help file of photoshop.

use the magic wand and select the white and then go to the select drop down menu and chose inverse then go to the edit dropdown menu and choose copy the create a new document and when making that new document tell it you want it transparent and then just go to the edit button and select paste. One way is to select it and use the delete key to erase it. The magic wand is a pretty good selection tool.

If you want it for a web site, just select save for web when you’ve finished and export it as a gif with a white matte fro transparency.
