Can any one confirm that when you upgrade from CS to CS-2 that all previous loaded programs,plus-ins and filters all stay intact or do you have reload all of that stuff again ?

Yes, they both work perfectly on my dual-xeon system with WinXP Pro.

you only need to reinstall/move 3rd party plugins. you should NOT point one version of ps to another’s plugin directory.

Thanks Dave,
So that means that I have relaods things like , Flaming Pear, Eye Candy, KPT Effects, etc and also programs like Extensis… wow it could take until CS 3 comes out !!
Why cant they make a true upgrade

No, I think Dave meant to relocate them.
Leave all Photoshop plugins (not 3rd party) where they are. Move all third party plugins to a separate directory, and point PS’s preferences to that extra directory.

This will simplify any future upgrades where PS again creates it’s own directory, and subdirectories for its own plugins. You can then again point to the "3rd pary plugin dir" from within the prefs.

Never point ps to the Plugins\Filters dir of a previous version.

Thanks Rob.

Is there a simple way to tell what is 3rd party plug-in versus what is in Adobe ? Thanks you

From Windows Explorer, right-click, select Properties, and pick the Version tab. And the Digimarc filters come with Photoshop, even though they aren’t versioned as Adobe. Also, the plugins from Adobe tend (almost but not quite uniformly) to have the same file date and time. I would skip over any plugins that have the same file date and time as most others; for other plugins, check the version info.

if they’re currently mixed into photoshop’s plugins folder, I recommend completely reinstalling 3rd party plugs to a completely new folder. going forward, that should be the last time you have to load them as you’ll be able to just point to that custom folder after each upgrade.

If you have created any custom brushes, gradients, tool presets, etc., for convenience these, too, will need to be migraded from their respective CS to CS2 folders.

If you have created, modified and/or downloaded/installed any actions, you will need to migrate them to CS2 as well.

So don’t stop at plugins.

good point danny. again for that, i have a seperate folder (one for plug ins, one for all other custom stuff).

I did that after version 6. been working great ever since!

Dave:

You’re inspiring me once again… 🙂

Suppose I’ve got a separate folder, e.g., \My-custom-settings, where all my custom settings and .js files have been saved. Then I make multiple shortcuts to this common folder.

Then I drag/drop one of these shortcuts in each of the applicable \presets folders. When I open (say) a Load actions…, Load texture…, Load [whatever]… dialog, Photoshop will see the files in the default folder within \presets + the applicable (but filed separately) custom files, right?

Is that how you’re doing it?

Earth to Dave for conceptual confirmation… 🙂

conceptually sure. but will ps recognize the shortcuts.

for most of the stuff i save out – brushes, atns, custom presets, etc. they need to be loaded via the respective palette so that’s what i use it for, but if ps can deal with the shortcuts for stuff like scripts, why not… i do remember something about not being able to use shortcuts somewhere in an earlier version though… loading plugins via shortcuts didn’t work maybe?

off for a couple days guys. car’s picking me up soon for a flight to orlando to see mickey mouse. back on sat! come up with some good ps tips by then, huh? and don’t give len and bob and ian too much trouble! (and will someone get chris a shot of tequilla!)

For plugins I still use the preferences setting to point to a separate folder, but I’ll bet shortcuts within \plugins to folders outside \plugins would work. It works with Corel Painter. Don’t know if it would make any difference with startup time.

For tools that have palettes with flyout menus that list files at the bottom, e.g., actions, brushes, presets, gradients, patterns, etc., using a shortcut inside the applicable \presets folder to an outside folder works dandy, e.g., Shortcut-to-my-presets.lnk inside \Tools.

Doesn’t work for a filter like Texturizer of the Scripts dialog where you have to engage a browse dialog to hunt down a file.

So there’s a partial win and anything I can do now to simplify the transition to CS2 (and beyond) is time well apent.

BTW: Useless bit of trivia time.

Did you know if you put .atn files inside of \Presets\Scripts, the .atn files will show up on the Actions Palette Menu flyout the same way as .atn files in \Presets\Photoshop Actions?

= = = = = = = =

Have fun at DW. I won’t let up on Len, Bob, Tony, Chris and Ian. What fun would that be? 🙂
