you mean open a file? photoshop doesn’t deal with "projects".
check and see if a dialog is off screen.
check this faq:
Robert Levine, "Dialog box is missing??" #1, 14 Feb 2004 6:41 pm </cgi-bin/webx?13/0>
and if that doesn’t work, try this one:
LenHewitt, "How to delete/reset Photoshop preferences" #1, 23 Jun 2004 1:05 am </cgi-bin/webx?13/0>
Hi Dave,
I did as you suggested and nothing worked. Even this.. and yes, it is a new file I am trying to open. Sorry.
A: Hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys (Mac: Command, Option, Shift) while starting Photoshop. A dialog box will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences file. (it just opens)
A2: You can also simply search your hard drive for a *.psp file and delete it. It will be called something along the lines of "Adobe Photoshop X Prefs.psp". This file is not there either.
This all happened when API loaded a new Video driver in an update.
if you didn’t get the dialog box try it again until you do. or if you want to look for the file you need to turn on "view hidden files and folders" (uncheck it) in windows explorer> tools> folder options> view tab. then you’ll be able to see the folder and the prefs file from inside explorer.
also you may want to go right to the manufacturer’s site and get their version of the latest video driver. the MS supplied drivers are notoriously problematic and way behind releases from what the card makers have.
I checked my file setting and the view hidden files was already chosen. I will try to contact ATI. I did see another post about Hyperthreading in the system BIOS from another ATI user. Any comments?
Thanks!
I’m concerned by the ‘automatic update’ as there shouldn’t be any for PS7 which is now two versions behind current. (Frankly there is no point in having the updater check – there won’t be any updates of ps7x or CS). The only thing that could have updated is the update software itself.
I’m not convinced that that is the source of your problem.

adobe doesn’t load video drivers. my assumtion was windows update.
patti, don’t be too quick to mess with the bios or the hyperthreading setting (in the bios), especially if you have to ask about it. trust me, you’re better off not messing in there as you can completely disable your machine if you hit the wrong setting (same warning for messing around in the registry!)
it’s most likely something else.
let’s go back… you said:
When I choose New, the program locks up.
locks up how… can you move the cursor around the screen or completely locks? can you crtl-alt-delete to end the program or does the whole machine lock up forcing you to turn off and on.
Ah, misread post the post Dave.
aye, t’was a bit confusing. 😉
Mine is doing the same thing. I cannot start a new project. I can continue with a current one by going File – Open or Ctrl – O but if I want to do a new one, File – New or Ctrl – N my (x) that closes the software and all many options under the top menu are all grayed out. I can only do an end task to close PS7.
My computer did a windows update when I started this morning but I can’t remember when the last time I used PS7 on this laptop.
Thanks!
reset the prefrences per the faq! the new and or open dialog is off screen!
Dave: that did it!
Thanks for the info!!!
you’re welcome savitri.
