Try this.
Once you’ve made your selection (use whichever approach fits your needs), SAVE the selction. Once you do this, the selection will appear as a channel. You can then modify this channel by using Gaussian Blur with much greater control and you’ll be able to better see the amount of blur. Another plus is that you can use the lasso to select parts of the selection and apply different levels of blur to different parts of the selection.
Once you’ve finished modifying the channel, go back to the layer you’re trying to change and load the selection. Copy and paste it to it’s own layer (or conversely reverse the selection and copy and paste the surrounding area to it’s own layer) and then do whatever you were planning to do. Adjust opacity, etc. etc.
Just another approach …. a bit more involved … but lot’s more control. Fool around with it and have fun.

wrote in message Is there a way to slightly blur a selection’s edge only? Feathering does not really do this, and Gaussian blur blurs everything. Thanks.
Puzzling. Feather does it OK in Photoshop 6.
You could always do it manually using the blur tool. It’s underneath the smudge tool. Smudge on a very low setting does a good blur too if you use
a
stirring motion.
