Is there a way to slightly blur a selection’s edge only? Feathering does not really do this, and Gaussian blur blurs everything. Thanks.

One way you could do this is to select your marquee tool and select the area that you want to blur… it has to be at least a 1 pixel selection though. Feather it slightly, say about 1-2 pixels (this will help blend the blur into the rest of the image) and then apply the Gaussian blur.

try going into quick mask mode (Q on keyboard) you then have a grayscale mask that you can edit using brushes or the blur tool etc.
After editing you convert back to a selection by typing q again. By the way, feather will modify the edges of a selection, perhaps you just aren’t using a big enough radius.

A couple things you might want to try – dupicate the base image (background) so you have the exact same image stacked over the original.

Use the lasso tool with anywhere between 80 and 150 pixel feather (I use this technique frequently) to make your selection and rather than use "gaussian blur," I would recommend that you use – if you can get it – KPT 5 Blurrrr’s "camera optics" blur (which reproduces the circles of confusion of an optical system. Filter developer Michael Herf explains the technique at this link: <
http://www.stereopsis.com/kpt/kptblur.html#co> ). Apply the blur that suits your taste and if you want to shape the blur further, use eraser tool at 50% opacity to erase to show parts in layer below you don’t want blured. The following image used this technique:

Hope this helps,

Puzzling. Feather does it OK in Photoshop 6.

You could always do it manually using the blur tool. It’s underneath the smudge tool. Smudge on a very low setting does a good blur too if you use a stirring motion.

Try this.

Once you’ve made your selection (use whichever approach fits your needs), SAVE the selction. Once you do this, the selection will appear as a channel. You can then modify this channel by using Gaussian Blur with much greater control and you’ll be able to better see the amount of blur. Another plus is that you can use the lasso to select parts of the selection and apply different levels of blur to different parts of the selection.

Once you’ve finished modifying the channel, go back to the layer you’re trying to change and load the selection. Copy and paste it to it’s own layer (or conversely reverse the selection and copy and paste the surrounding area to it’s own layer) and then do whatever you were planning to do. Adjust opacity, etc. etc.

Just another approach …. a bit more involved … but lot’s more control. Fool around with it and have fun.
