Error Disabling controls

Have you treid trashing your preferences?

Not yet, but why do I have to keep doing this? I just get CS2 as I like it, then get an error message and have to trash preferences and start again.

Prefs renamed and CS2 run, problem persists.
CS2 and Bridge could be great programmes, ruined for me by constant bugs and poor error messages. I suppose we are coming to accept bugs in early releases, but it really shouldn’t be acceptable. And error messages should be written in a way they are meaningful to users rather than to programmers.
I shouldn’t have to spend so much time just getting a application to work, when will 9.01 be released?

Once you’ve got everything running as you want it. Make a copy of the prefs file. then if you ever need to trash the file in the future you’ll be able to rename the saved copy to put the setting back as you like them.

I have done that, but if trashing the prefs cures the problem, then dosn’t reinstating the prefs just bring the problem back?

The problem with the prefs file is when it gets corrupted, so putting back a good copy is fine.

However, you SHOULDN’T BE GETTING a corrupt prefs file at all – that usually happens either because the users switches off the machine without closing Photoshop first, or because of some hardware error preventing the prefs file from being written correctly.

As replacing, removing or re installing dosn’t cure the problem and the unhelpful error message I can’t see that the prefs file is at issue here. What does that error message mean? Do the developers write error messages without recording what they are as it seems microsoft do? Indeed is it in fact a windows error message?
Len, are you one of the Adobe team? Because falling back on the "hardware error" is a bit rich and the only time I ever switch off my machine without closing Photoshop is when photoshop crashes and locks and I am left with no alternate.

And that is when prefs corruption is likely to occur. More important is WHY Photoshop is crashing on you.

As to your error message, it is not one I have come across before and to the best of my knowledge has never previously been reported here. It could be something new to CS2, but suggests to me that Photoshop is having difficulties with the web gallery template you have selected. Have you modified the templates at all?

Yes I have a couple of modified templates that I have used in CS previously and moved over to CS2. I have used them a couple of times since installing CS2 without a problem (I use them to post proofs for clients).
I suppose that one of the styles they use may be in the CS file, I have disabled the link to the CS plug in folder to stop CS2 reporting that it couldn’t load certain plug ins. I will try and make some further adjustments tommorrow.
I wasn’t having a dig about being one of the Adobe team (I love them all) as they do try to be helpful. However if Adobe employed some good technical writers to re write the error messages put in by those who hack the code, those of us with a limited understanding might work out what they are supposed to mean. It is a failing of most software developers that the user interface (which includes error messages) is the last thing to be sorted. Adobe are not as bad as microsoft (impossible) their error messages (error a11117891b) are incomprehensable to even their own devlopers!
