I know that everyone seems to be having freezing problems, but the symptoms don’t seem to match and the fixes haven’t worked.

A few months ago, my job handed me a box with a new Dell Dimension 300 (with XP Home SP2) in it and Adobe Creative Suite. I installed everything fine. But early on, I noticed that Photoshop would occassionally freeze *after* loading. Sometimes it would freeze if I tried to do anything, such as open, import or create a document. Other times, it would load, wait 5 seconds and then freeze on its own. Closing the program and rebooting seemed to work until a week ago.

Now it freezes every time the program finishes loading, with the error: "Could not complete your request because of a program error." I read through the forums and deleted New Doc Sizes.psp but that did not help.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I use Photoshop constantly in my job and am desperate to get it working.

Assuming the program is loaded correctly, I would suspect the problem is with the memory itself. Two things tend to stall a system (I’ve had plenty of experience..) – bad memory and bad drive controllers (especially SCSI). Also, is the Dell a dual processor computer? If so, you’d need the MP update patch. Try removing your memory DIMMs one at a time – if you can, or swapping memory with a known good similar system.

I do not think that the Dell has dual processors. I do not have problems with any other software, and only Photoshop freezes. I used the fix in the FAQ about resetting preferences, but that did not change anything. I uninstalled Creative Suite (saving the activation info) and reinstalled it, but that did not change anything. It continues to have the same error: "Could not complete your request because of a program error." That doesn’t really tell me anything, does it?

Scot: When you uninstall, not all of the directories and files are removed, hopefully you rebooted before you reinstalled. You should still look to make sure that all the related directories are deleted, including deleting them manually.

It also helps to have a registry cleaner and run that before reinstalling to make sure that all entries are removed.

I did a complete uninstall of Creative Suite, went in manually to delete the directories, both in Program Files and Aplication Data. I then restarted the computer before reinstalling. It still freezes once the program finishes loading, with the error: "Could not complete your request because of a program error." I’m at a bit of a loss. I feel a fool for upgrading to CS.
