Photoshop: What part of "Save" do you not understand?

When I click Save or use Ctrl-S, I know what I’m doing — I just want the file saved the way it does in every other program. However, Photoshop (I use CS2, but it’s true with every version) thinks it knows better than me and doesn’t believe what I’m telling it to do. It comes back with the Save As dialogue box asking how I want to save the JPG. Aside from being a pain in the ___, it screws up the automation of actions I create where I want the file to be replaced without user intervention.

If I want Save As, I’ll ask for it. Further, if I want to save that JPG as a PSD, I’ll ask for that, too — I don’t need yet another message box warning me when I try to close the file. PS should remember the last file type used and leave it set to that. Even little ol’ Paint Shop Pro doesn’t have these issues, and for a professional-level program Photoshop sure does some amateurish things.

You need to keep in mind that not all of the features in PS are supported in every format it can save as.

It is remembering the file type of the current document and if you id something that makes it incompatible with that file type (say add a layer) then the dialog box appears.

Save as a PSD once and it should continue saving without any message boxes. It may be asking for a "Save As…" if you do something that is incompatible with the previous file type. For instance, if you originally save as a PNG, and later convert to CMYK color with layers, neither of which PNG supports, Photoshop will ask (read give you the power to choose) for the preferred file type. This is much better than having Photoshop automatically choosing one for you.

I don’t know. If I hit Ctrl-S when I had a JPG open, I’d be royally ticked off if PS didn’t prompt me to change file types. The same would go for any lossy file format. As to this behavior being "amateurish," I disagree. PSP’s behavior is the incorrect one to me.
