Hello everyone,

I have version CS that I am happy with. Some of the features of CS2 sound interesting (I like the bridge idea and the improved heal features), but it seems there are some issues with this new version based on what I read so far in the forum (memory allocation, bad installs and so forth). I have 2.5 questions:

1. Is it best to wait until some of these issues are resolved with an update before considering an upgrade?

2. With Adobe’s acquisition of Macromedia, I wonder if there will be some imbedded Macromedia functions in future editions of PhotoShop (or other Adobe products – I have Illustrator and Acrobat as well)? Will it be worth a wait for this version (is there one planned) intead of upgrading to CS2?

I think it would be really cool if I could create a .psd project or some animated image and export to flash from within PhotoShop.

Thanks,

If you wait til nobody is reporting issues you’ll never upgrade. As for MACR, you’re likely to be years away from seeing anything. It will probably take at least another 6 months for the merger to be approved.

1. That is your call. There was no significant bug fix version to PS CS. If there is one for CS2, this level of upgrade is usually free (downloadable) for registered users.

2. This is pure speculation. Anyone who knows, won’t be able to say, unless they are really, really bored with their job. That said, my guess is that there will be one more upgrade to CS, in the fall of 2006, before any major consolidation of the programs starts to occur. The merger still hasn’t completed yet (I think) and after it does it will take a lot of time for the logistics of the teams to be integrated.

You can bet Adobe is working on CS3 right now. The list of suggested features is probably set, if not in stone, in something sticky, and the programmers will be mapping out the plans for coding, if not actually coding. With an 18 month revision cycle, I suspect that CS3 will be in early in-house testing before the dust has settled on the merger.

Basically Adobe and Macromedia cannot even talk until due diligence has been completed some time in October 2005. Once that has been completed then the two companies can work together on intergration plans.

Also another thing to watch is the FTC rulings on this merger…what will the FTC make Adobe divest (probably FreeHand as they did when they bought Aldus and probably GoLive)

So we will probably see one more release of the Suite if Adobe keeps to the 18 month cycle (with or without GoLive) and see intergration happen after CS3.

So basically if you wait, you are going to be at least 3 years behind the rest of us!!

I guess Adobe probably keep a fully running research and improvement team on the go anyway. Maybe turning a new product into a best compilation subject to hardware, software and OS specifications of the time.

I feel sorta sure that research versions of 64 bit code will be running somewhere in the universe confident that a strict NDA was in place first. Then there are the multicore apps … I bet some people are loving the work that they can’t talk about?

Not including what, hopefully, will be a great teaming up between Adobe and Macromedia – gosh! what surprises will that bring?

The only problem I can see with waiting is that there is no guarantee that Adobe will release a patch for CS2. There were and still are several problems with CS1 and they never released a patch for it.

If Adobe does integrate things from Macromedia it is at least 10 months away, I figure much more than that. I wouldn’t wait in the hopes they do, because they may not.

If you keep waiting for something perfect you will never get anything new.

Thanks everyone for the tips and replies.

I decided to make the plunge and get the Creative Suite CS2.

I can’t wait to get it. 🙂

you are hearing the people with install and upgrade issue .. this is the nature of the forum …. remember their is no forum concerning perfectly fine installs/upgrades.. in other words, many, many, many folks have installed and upgraded without issue … in fact some have a quickly starting more responsive Photoshop in CS2
