reset the prefrences per the FAQ section.
Thanks for the response Dave, but I can’t do anything about re-setting the Preferences. If I select Edit>Preferences>then any of the possibilities under that the application freezes. The cursor remains movable but when I click on any of the options at the top of the page when the menus drop down they are almost all grayed out. There are some to the far tight that look like they might work but the menus under File and Edit are locked in gray and none of the options can be selected. I can’t even close the application. My only option is to go to Task Manager to close PS7. Jack
Thank AGAIN Dave! I approached the Preferences issue from a different angle and was able to clear the settings enough to get the Crop Tool to work like it should. I haven’t had time to see if anything else works better or worse but for the moment all looks well……There is still the issue of re-loading the Upgrade disc though. Not to waste your time too much here, but in case I need to re-load it sometime in the future how can I get over the issue as described in my original post here? BTW: OS is WinXPHome, Thanks again, Jack
What Dave is suggesting (apart from actually reading the FAQ on the subject!) is pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift whilst firing up Photoshop.
You then need to answer Yes to the dialogue box which appears. This will delete you preferences file which has probably become corrupt.
Once it’s all hunky-dory again, don’t forget to download the 7.0.1 update. (or better still the CS2 trial!!)
Best of luck with it.
Chris.
You were thanking Dave whilst I was typing! <grin>
Glad it’s sorted. Resetting the prefs should sort out the failed reinstall issue too.
Chris.
Hi Chris! I am a little skittish about messing with things when they are working well enough for me, but the 7.0.1 and CS2 issues are interesting. I don’t know what they are so could you briefly explain both of them? Is there any danger for my present application in downloading either of them? Thank you for your interest, knowledge and time. Jack
PS 7.0.1 is a free essential update to PS7.
CS2 is the latest version of Photoshop, and it would cost in the region of $140 or £130 to upgrade from PS7.
You can’t do any harm downloading the 30 day trial and it won’t interfere with your existing installation.
Don’t be put off by the problems some people are posting about in this forum. For most people CS2 works great – and you’ll be blown away by the new features. It’s well worth the money and the 30 day trial costs nothing.
Best of luck either way.
Chris.
(PS I’ve no connection with Adobe other then being an enthusiastic PS user)
Thank you Chris. I’ll do the up-grade to 7.0.1 in the next day or so and when I have time I’ll try the CS2 application. In the mean time, and since I am already bugging the fool out of you :-), do you have any thoughts on the re-installion of the the upgrade issue? I had PS6 and bought the upgrade to PS7 about 2.5 years ago. It has worked well until this Preferences thing came along. In my earliest attempts to rectify that problem I tried to do a re-installation of the PS7 upgrade disc and found the installation symptoms that you can review in my first post to this thread. Do you think that the installation just stopped because my system already had PS7 in it or do you think that something else might be out of whack, or did I just do something wrong? As I say, now that things are back to normal I don’t really need do do the installation but in case I need to do so in the future I would print out your thoughts here and put them in the MS box for later use. Thanks again, Jack
IIRC, later versions of PS 7 already had the 7.0.1 patch applied. Check the splash screen for fine print.

Ralph,
If you find you need to re-install at some later date, you could copy the contents of the Photoshop folder from your CD to the HDD and run setup from there (in Safe Mode if necessary)

You need to Navigate to the preferences file and delete it completely before doing a reinstall. Otherwise Photoshop will attempt to adopt the old prefs file. If this is corrupt that could account for the installation not completing properly.
Chris.
Hi Chris! I don’t mean to latch on to your coat tails here but trying to find information in the forum and faqs is driving me crazy! I was encouraged by your notes about how good CS2 was so I down loaded a trial version. Now, when I try to open the app I get an error message, quote, "An error has been detected with a required application library and the product cannot continue. Please re-install the application". Actually I have installed the application at least twice with the same results. I am about to give up on CS2, but if you could direct me to the proper place to find a fix I would leave you alone and be very greatfull to you for your time. Also..sorry…My splash screen just says "Photoshop 7.0" and doesn’t indicate if it has upgraded to "7.0.1." or what ever. I tried to find a download to up-grade to that level but it is nowhere to be found. All the downloads that I find are related to CS2. I remember a little about the problems that I had when I installed the 7.0 upgrade from 6.0 and it was like pulling hen’s teeth to find out how to fix things and get the up-grade to go through. Adobe surely does put out a fantastic product but their support and navigation through the maze leaves a lot to be desired. Sorry for the vent! Any help that you could offer would be of great interest to me. Jack PS: I see that you are in the UK and make a living out of photographing ugly women :-).
