Okay, I want to take Chris Cox’s advice and update my video card driver so that CS2 performance might be better.

HOWEVER….

The instructions from the Gateway site for my PC are to hit somethingorrather key at boot to see the BIOS, and if the video card somethingorrather says this, that or the other thing, than the driver update is for me.

Erhmmm…..now, I am quite saavy, but the BIOS is a place I’ve never been, and a place I don’t understand.

And I’m scared to death about ******* up!

You should be able to look on the video card manufacturer’s support site and check for the latest drivers for your card.

Normally they would be a downloadable EXE file. If the new drivers cause problems you can roll back to the old ones. Do a System Restore point first.

John’s advice would be sound for anything but a Gateway (or Compaq, or HP…) OEMs can be such twits.

I don’t understand Gateway’s instructions. Normally, the video card bios is independent of the driver. UNLESS, Gateway changed the bios version and the driver version simultaneously… then there would be a correlation. Only Gateway knows for sure.

As far as getting into the bios, just *looking* around won’t harm your computer. The bios will ask you before saving any changes, and you’re not going there to change anything. So don’t.

Tina: Don’t be too worried, basically they are saying go into the BIOS, press F10 to save changes (although you are not making any) and continue on your merry way. Gateway is just making sure that your BIOS is using the driver you installed. Possibly when you are starting up, you are seeing a reference to your video card.

Which begs the question, is it an onboard controller or a seperate video card?

Tina – ouch. Why do they make something that should be simple so complicated….

ID – I dunno anything about the ‘guts’ in the machine.

Chris – Who knows? Just to turn me more gray than I already am?

Tina: do you have another, say, older computer that you can access the BIOS in?

It won’t solve the problem but it may give you the confidence that may be helpful in accessing a BIOS
