ImageReady CS2 destroys Smart Objects?

I jumped a .psd with Smart Objects into IR-CS2 for slicing, and got this message: "The file has smart objects that ImageReady does not understand. ImageReady will remove them when saving the file." Just for ‘fun’ I saved the file, and ImageReady DID remove ALL of the smart objects (rasterized them, actually). This effectively destroyed them.

This CAN’T be right. How can there be an object supported in Photoshop that is not just unavailable but is actually changed irretreivably in the companion version of IR? I MUST just be missing something…

Because ImageReady is dead and wasn’t upgraded in CS2. You have slicing in Photoshop CS and CS2 use it there instead of going in to ImageReady.

Ah, no, not really, Robert. There is slicing in Pshop but not much else: no replacement I can find for IR’s ability to create rollovers, or image maps, or to group slices into tables.

ImageReady ships in the CS2 Suite. ImageReady CS2 says "CS2" and "Version 9" on its splash screen. Photoshop CS2 has buttons to jump images to ImageReady CS2. ImageReady CS2 has a new warning box that knows about "smart objects" even though IRCS2 doesn’t support them.

If ImageReady wasn’t upgraded, then all this "CS2" is mislabeling, to put it mildly. And if it can’t open a CS2 psd without damaging it, it shouldn’t be in the new suite at all.

I’d agree, but there is a reason that ImageReady CS2 is not mentioned in the marketing material. The most significant update to IRCS2 is the splash screen. IRCS2 didn’t even get the small interface changes that the other CS2 apps got.

Let me ask this way. In all of the press material for Photoshop CS2 did you see one mention of any enhancements to ImageReady. Sure they changed the name and version number but that is it. It is clear from your experience that ImageReady does not support SmartObjects and that is because it was not upgrade. ImageReady is dead. Now that Adobe is going to own Macromedia I fully expect it to be replaced with the far superior Fireworks program in CS3.

You’re probably right, Robert, but if you are… shame on Adobe! A re-written Splash screen does not a new version make. How nice that soon we’ll be in these hands no matter what image editor we use… Sigh.
