After establishing a text layer, how can I separate the text from the layer so I can save the text only. I want to move the fancy title I have created into another project without picking up any of the background from its layer.

If it’s truly a text layer there shouldn’t be anything else on it but the text. Just drag that layer to your new project.

Unless you rasterized it, the text is the only thing on the layer.

Select text layer> salect all> copy & paste
(Paste *may* rasterize the text in this step)
or:
Turn on text tool while in text layer. ( T in the tool menu.) Highlight text by dragging the mouse across it. Copy. Paste. To save your styles, right click on the layer in the layer window Copy layer style, Paste layer style on new tex layer (at Layers window) -Mike
