I’m using Photoshop 5.5 I would like to know if it is possible to BATCH resize a number of images to the same height (while the width would automatically change proportionately). At the same time I would like to change the resolution from 300 to 72. Is this possible and if so, how do I go about it? I was sure I used to do this with a previous version of Photoshop but now I’m not sure. Thanks for any help you can give.

All you have to do is record an action that resizes the image (if this is for screen display, you shouldn’t bother with the ppi).

You record: Image|Image Size… and set the height to whatever you want, with constrain proportions checked. While you’re recording, save the dummy file and carry the save to completion. Note, use Save AS, not save. Then stop recording.

Look in the actions palette and find the Save As step from above. Toggle the dialog to OFF (the little square next to the action name).

You are now ready to batch

File|Automate|Batch:

Action to run: Resize
Source: Folder
Choose: pick the source

Destination: Folder
Choose: pick the destination
Override Save As Information: CHECKED

Hit go. Each image will open, one by one from the source folder, the action will perform the prescribed steps, with a Save As step as the final event, then the image will close; rinse and repeat.
