When my system hard disk fails (not IF), what is required to reinstall an upgrade version of photoshop CS2? I have the upgrade version of CS2; this was an upgrade of CS which, in turn, was an upgrade of photoshop version 7 which was an upgrade of photoshop version 5.5 (which also might have been an upgrade, but i can not remember). So, i have the upgrade path of 5.5 > 7 > CS > CS2.

Consider the situation where my hard disk has been replaced because the old one suddenly failed. I have reloaded the OS (windows XP) and am now ready to reinstall photoshop CS2. What do i need to have available (or to do) to accomplish this reinstallation?

Just have the CD for any version from 5.5 on available for verification. It doesn’t matter if it’s an upgrade CD. You’ll be asked to insert it during the CS2 installation.

You should also be aware that an installation like this, where PS CS2 was previously installed on another hard drive, will be treated as a new activation. If it is your second permitted one, there is no problem unless you also wish to install PS CS2 on another system. However, if 2 installations have already been performed, then you will be denied activation and will need to contact Adobe for assistance. The automated reactivation will not work since you’re still dealing with a need to have your activation records reset to permit this activation as the replacement of a prior one for the bad hard drive. This is all based upon a non-recoverable hard drive failure where you’re unable to boot to that drive and run the PS CS2 uninstaller, so as to access the Transfer Activation process. If Transfer Activation can be performed, then you’ve got control to free up one activation so that it can be performed on the new hard drive.

I’m still using Photoshop 5.0. I hadn’t felt the need to upgrade, but I’m doing more photo work now and most resources I’ve found don’t seem to deal with versions this old.

I saw that Fry’s was selling the upgrade for $130, so I thought I’d take the plunge. However, Bob said a couple of things that made me wonder.

First, he said the upgrade would only work for 5.5 and up. Does that mean I’m left out?

The second interesting point was that the CD inserted could itself be an upgrade CD. Doesn’t that imply that somebody could buy an older Photoshop upgrade CD, then buy a new CS2 upgrade and install CS2 without ever having purchased the full product? That seems like a possible hole in the security model. (If that kind of question is off-limits here, please just delete this paragraph. I still need to know if I can upgrade my Photoshop….)

Thanks for any help,
Steve

Steve: You can upgrade to CS2 from any version of Photoshop. It’s just that you will have to activate by phone if you’re upgrading from a version older than 5.5

If you did’nt register your original PS5 you’ll need to have proof of purchase available when you phone.

As for your "hole in the security module" theory – I’m sure Adobe will have that one plugged one way or another.

It will only PHYSICALLY work with 5.5 or earlier. You’ll need to call Adobe for special instructions to install the upgrade.

Note to Chris: You don’t need to call Adobe to activate it, you need to call Adobe to install it.

Thanks for the information. I’m glad that I can upgrade.
