i have a web template which i only have to replace the photos with mine but even if i keep to exactly the same dimensions and dpi, even saving at the lowest jpg settings my files still end up double the size of the sample ones that came with it, yet look far worse (jpg artifacts?) whats the knack to rezizing what are very good quality photos to a specific size, say, 100×70 pixels at 72 dpi?

BTW i use PS7.

After you size the image apply filter/sharpen/unshrp mask (usually about 100%) then save for web – jpg high

You get slightly sharper images if you use multiples of screen resolutions i.e 1024×768 reduces nicely to 125×94, If it’s not a screen size sometime it works well to scale the image on screen say 12.5% then use screen print to capture a screen dump image then paste that into a new document, can be sharper than resizing.

Experience is something you get just after you need it.
