Hi
Hope you can help. I am a relative virgin at Photoshop and am using the in-built tutorials to help. I am currently on "Creating an image using layers".

I have followed the instructions so far but when it comes to "Apply a layer mask" I cannot get it to work as per the tutorial.

I have converted the background to a layer as instructed, then used the Ellipse Tool to create a circle. This produces a solid black circle. Then I have clicked "add layer mask".

This produces another, what looks like a layer, in the layers window.

In the picture on the tutorial it shows the mask linked to the image, all in one line.

I am sure it is something straight forward but I would be really grateful if someone can help.

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Wrens, the ellipse tool shouldn’t produce a filled selection. Are you sure you are using the ellipse tool and not the ellipse shape tool? The ellipse tool is at the upper left side of the tool box along with the rectangular tool. If you are using the ellipse tool, you should get an oval with so-called ‘marching ants’ around a part of your image. Then, when you hit the make mask icon at the bottom of the layers palette, that part will show up as white in the mask. The mask does show up to the right of your image. It should be black with a small white oval in it.

Thanks Wesley
Doh!!! I was using the Ellipse Shape instead of the Ellipse Marquee tool.

Thanks again for reply, I now have a few more hairs left in my head.
