at last i have found a way of cutting a path so that it leaves a gap in it (hope this is a feature and not a bug!)if you use the direct path selection tool and select one of the anchor points and then right click on it and choose delete anchor point, it deletes that one and moves the line back to the next points available. if you select a point and hit delete on the keyboard it removes the point and part of the line back to the next available point that it has.
