I’m using a Canon 20D camera at the moment and I use nothing but RAW files (.CR2 in Canon speak). The full file name looks like this: _MG_6425.CR2

For the last two years my work flow has been to work on the file in Camera RAW and then send it over to Photoshop to complete the editing. When I’m done I like to save the file as X6435.psd (or X6435.jpg).

Most photofinishers won’t print more than five or six characters on the back of a print and it’s always the FIRST five or six characters. Since _MG_ doesn’t help identify the file I’ve lopped it off so they will print the significant characters. By keeping the original (and meaningful) four numbers I can get back to the surviving RAW file within seconds. The X lets me know that I’ve worked on the file, and when I’m being silly I can refer to them as the X-files.

Now I can and have done this manually and I’m happy with the work flow as far as it goes. But I’d like to be able to go through this renaming process as an automatic event. I’d like to be able to use an action to preserve the last four digits in the original file name and include that X in the front. This would be along with a Save As to first a .psd file and then a .jpg file.

Does anyone know how to do this?
