I got Photoshop CS2. I’m stoked. In no time I shall be coloring peoples’ hair blue while drawing "ALL YOUR BASE." in the background. However, the little window where the actual picture is supposed to be only comes up half of the time. The certain half that it does come up, PS only responds to every three clicks on the mouse and can’t tell when I’m holding down the mouse button. I can select tools and drop-down menus just fine; it just doesn’t work when I try to create/edit the picture. I’ve met the Windows system requirements and consulted the help file. I’ve also defragmented and scanned my computer.

I use Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2. I have an Intell Pentium III processor (733MHz) and 640MB of RAM. (CS2 says 556MB of it is "available". I set it to use 500MB ("90%").)

MacBook Pro 16” Mockups 🔥

– in 4 materials (clay versions included)

– 12 scenes

– 48 MacBook Pro 16″ mockups

– 6000 x 4500 px

see all the threads on slowness. they’re working on it.

set mem usage to 55% in prefrences. also what video card are you using? and driver? latest driver?

I don’t think slowness is the problem. It just doesn’t DO it. I try to open a file; nothing happens. I try to save a file; nothing happens. I try to edit a picture; I hafta double-click to get it to perform the action, meaning that holding down the mouse button does nothing. Anyway, my video thing is a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX. I’ll be sure to set the usage to 55% and check out the slownes topics. Thanks.

Having same problem. P4 3.0ghz with HT, Nvidia fx5500, 1,5gb ram. Winxp service pack 2, I have to wait at least 10 minutes before I can use the program. I watch the Task Manager and photoshop cs2 just keeps using 50% processor then finally drops off and I can use the program. After that it works just fine.

Deleting the prefernce file did seem to help some. Cut it almost in half. Down to about 6 minutes. Of couse there was files for 7, 8, and 9 there so I deleted them all. Just for safetys sake

Justme, could you elaborate: do you have a lot of fonts, third party plug-ins, styles, etc (state how many)? where does it hang in the startup sequence?

Don’t have a lot of fonts and no 3rd party plugins. It doesn’t really stop as much as just takes forever. The status screen seems to load pretty fast but after that I can’t use it for 6 minutes. Don’t know what it’s doing.

How many fonts do you have? "don’t have a lot" can mean many things: a dozen, a few hundreds?

Just for reference, I have a much less capable machine (733 MHz P3, 768MB RAM) and PS (CS or CS2) takes about a minute to load to the point where it functions. Given my computer, I consider this acceptable. You must have a serious problem with video card/driver or bad memory to be six times as slow with a processor that is 4x mine in speed. Download the latest driver from nvidia and install it according to the directions (i.e., remove driver, reboot, install new driver, reboot) and see if there is improvement.

Did some maintence downloaded new nvidia driver. Got rid of some fonts. Had ton more than I thought. I would say close to a 1,000. Got some more work to do with those. Only takes about 2 minutes now. Once running the thing kicks serious butt. Love the new features. Vanishing Point is worth the total price of the upgrade. Plus the Bridge is killer. Anyway thanks for all the advice. Working great now.

Great! Although 2 minutes still seems slow, given your computer.

With such an amount of fonts, you should seriously consider a font management program, to temporarily disable unnecessary fonts.
