Photoshop saves TIFs twice

I originally posted this in the Bridge forum but now think it’s really a PS or ACR problem. I just noticed it after the Bridge 1.01 update.

When I save any file to another format, PS goes through the save cycle twice. It saves the new file and then recycles to the Save As screen, where it shows the new file as already on disk (it is) and when I select it again it asks if I want to replace it. If I say no, the screen closes out and the file is on disk as I wanted; if I say yes it saves once more and then closes out.

This happens if I open the file in Bridge or if I open it in PS. It seems to be a minor annoyance until I realized it’s messing up my Actions and my batch processing.

I don’t know if this started right after the Bridge update or if I just didn’t notice it before. Quite possible I didn’t notice it.

Is there any setting that may control this?

This is an addition to my message above.

I’ve investigated further and boiled down the problem to one thing: there does not see to be a plain Save function, either from hot keys or from the menus. Selecting from the menu or using "Ctrl-S" brings up the "Save As", not the "Save". This is why it saves twice when I just want to save. It happens even if I made a change to a file and then hit Ctrl-S. Don’t have to change the format to trigger this.

And it happens in ACR 3.1 when I hit the Save button. Any ideas?

This is very strange indeed. It can’t be a universal effect of updating to Bridge 1.01 or this place would have been flooded with complaints and it would be impossible for something so obviously strange to go unnoticed before Adobe released it. The fact that it is happening in ACR as well is even odder. I wasn’t really going to update to Bridge 1.01 in any case having read a few complaints but I’m definitely not going to now. I’m afraid I’ve got no helpful suggestions but I’ll be keeping an eye on this thread.

Judith, I have Ctrl S or Save in the menu. You say that you don’t have that choice, is that right. I haven’t a clue as to why you don’t have it. Hopefullly, someone else can answer that question. Just wanted to let you know that I have it.

been fiddling with the menus and shortcuts?

No, that’s not what I said. I added a P.S. to my first post.

What I said was that I have the Save in the menu, and of course it can be accessed through Ctrl-S, BUT it does not function like a plain vanilla Save. It saves and then immediately throws up a Save As screen, which shows the file it just saved. I can then Save As which replaces the original file, or just close out the Save As via Cancel.

And I have not played at all with menus or key functions. The reason this is so annoying is because it messes up the Actions I use for Batch processing.

The "double save" also occurs when, for example, I edit a previously saved .tif image. I use Ctrl-S, it saves the change and then brings up the Save As screen.

Judith: Try Resetting the Preferences File (as per the FAQs). A corrupt Prefs file is often the cause of strange or erratic behavour (in the program, not the user) <grin>

Hope it helps.

Well, I still don’t have the Save As screen popping up when I save changes with Ctrl S. Maybe, as Chris has mentioned, resetting the preferences will correct things.

Chris:

Resetting the Pshop preferences did it. Thanks. Now the saves work as they should.

Chris:

I sent you a message a few minutes ago that getting rid of my preferences for Pshop fixed the problem, and it did. Now it’s back.

I went back into Photoshop and had no trouble saving as usual after changes. Then, opened bridge and from the Bridge browser opened a tif that I had converted from a NEF using Nikon Capture. Made a change and the probelm started after the first save again.

Closed out both programs and reopened. The problem is here again, definitely. Guess I’ll have to get rid of the prefs again. Do you think it would be worthwhile clearing the Bridge preferences also? Or, will that cause problems?

I think all of this started after the Bridge update.

Yes I would try clearing both Bridge and PS prefs. I have the Bridge update with nothing like this showing up, so there must be some problem or conflict on your particular machine.

If resetting the prefs temporarily cleared the problem we must assume you are on the right track.

Ultimately, you may have to consider reinstalling CS and/or the Bridge update. Don’t forget, reinstalling doesn’t overwrite the prefs, so you’ll need to delete this/these manually first.

Hope you manage to get the problem fixed soon.

How does one reset Bridge prefs then?

Same procedure as for PS, Hold down Crt+Alt+Shift whilst firing up the program.

You’ll get a dialogue asking this is really what you want. Answer Yes.

If you don’t get the dialogue, the hitting Crt+Alt+Shift a fraction after double clicking the Bridge desktop shortcut icon.

I’d assumed that but I wasn’t getting the dialog because I wasn’t doing it fast enough. I just did it now though. Need to be pretty nippy with the left hand.

Chris:

Ok thanks. A few more questions.

Today, before I start my work with Pshop/Bridge — by the way, I usually start Bridge from within Pshop. I assume this makes no difference — anyway, I’ll clear both preference files before firing up the program. If this doesn’t work, I can reinstall the whole kit and kaboodle, but do I have to uninstall first or will it do a "Repair"? Also, since the Bridge update is not posted, assume I’ll have to use the update wizard from inside Bridge. Correct? Sure would like to have a copy of the update for things such as this.

Chris et all:

Guess you were out enjoying your holiday today. Hope it was a good one.

I reinstlled PS CS2. There were two options: Repair and Uninstall. I chose the easy way, Repair. It did not fix the problem, so tomorrow guess I’ll try to Uninstall and then reinstall.

If the problem is in one of the dll or other common files, I imagine I should also remove these. If another program uses them they’ll be returned when I reinstall. Is this correct?

While I wait for your answer, or from anyone who knows, I’ll make screen shots of all my setting screens and copy my scripts, actions, and plugins to another drive for a later return.
