What’s the best book currently out on Photoshop CS. There are onmly a few already available. I wonder which is better, Down and Dirty, or Photoshop CS for Digital Photographers. Thans

neither. Down and Dirty doesn’t have that much in it specific to CS. So far, Art of Photoshop, Daniel Giordan gets my vote, though there’s very good stuff to be found in Photoshop Show with Russell Brown, but
a) it is not a book for newbies (despite the cutesy approach) and b) the
gonzo style and kitschy projects may be initially off-putting. I like RB in person,
and nobody knows CS better, but the book’s a little schizophrenic. Colin Smith’s How to do Everything with PSCS is a good basic primer, but not much there for advanced users–read that last week.

I have Bert Monroy’s newest coming this week. I have great hopes….. Has anyone read the new version of PS Artistry? (Haynes and Crumpler?)

Has anyone read the new version of PS Artistry? (Haynes and Crumpler?)

Due in stores Jan 20, according to Barry’s web site … www.maxart.com

I learned much of what I know about Photoshop from earlier versions of Artistry (and "Real World Photoshop") and, though I obviously haven’t seen the CS version, if it’s like the earlier ones it should be an excellent choice for the digital photographer.

You might want to wait a few weeks. There are only a few books out that have been updated for CS; in the coming weeks there will be a bunch more to choose from.

Of course, it all depends on what kind of book you’re looking for – if you want something basic like Classroom in a Book or one of the Dummies books, those are available – but it’s impossible to give a canned answer to the question "what’s the best book?" That’s like asking what’s the "best movie", the "best painting" or the "best food"….the answer, of course, is "it depends" – on
many things. There are *so* many books available on Photoshop (I know, I’ve got virtually all of ’em), but there’s no single book that’s always going to be "best" for everyone (and although only a few of the books have been updated for CS, many more will be in the coming weeks and months). It’s true that there are certainly some books that are better than others, but so many different kinds of people use Photoshop for so many different things, and we all have our own preferred learning styles, that the only person you can really say what the "best" book for you is…..you.

If you want to find out more about books before you decide what to buy…..you ought to check out the Photoshop Zone, a web site dedicated to in-depth reviews of books on Photoshop, with detailed reviews and LOTS of information on hundreds of different Photoshop books:

http://www.photoshopzone.com

The Photoshop Zone website has been helping Photoshop users make good, informed choices when they go shopping for a Photoshop book for almost ten years….kind of like a "consumer reports" for Photoshop books. Many users have found it very helpful. Check it out yourself and see.

Hope that helps,

Of the two, the latter. If you’re looking for a quick primer on how to do a lot of fairly common things in PS that really focus in on what many digital photographers would want out of PS, "Photoshop CS
for Digital Photographers" is quite good. It has zip, however, on color managment advice and assumes you’ll get that somewhere else. Look at it before you decide, just to make sure.

Photoshop Zone is pretty good advice, but they’re
not up to date right now— there are at least a dozen CS books out now, (check Amazon or Borders–I’ve bought and/or
read half a dozen not listed on PZ) and they only list 4– Classroom, D&D, Dummies and one other.

JP,

The others are on the way and will be added shortly. And I’m bracing for the major glut of books expected to be released in the coming weeks.

I figure the "critial mass" of PSCS books is still at least a month away (after all, it does take SOME time after the software is completed to update a book). Stay tuned. 🙂

January will be huge…..
I’m looking forward to the newest from Monroy, Willmore, and Haynes & Crumpler— I think Margulis has an update coming out soon, too. And you know Davis and McClelland will have new editions…..

I bought Art of Photoshop in Miami back in Oct. and
it is the prettiest PS book I’ve seen in ages…..Giordan’s "How to use PSCS" is also a very attractively designed beginner’s book. As mentioned, Colin Smith’s new "How to do Everything with PSCS" is also a nice book of basics, but no magic for mavens. I love his tutorials,
but this wasn’t that kind of book, I guess. And I really WANTED to like the Russell Brown book….but it just can’t seem to decide who its audience is…..

When you update, don’t forget the new versions of Eismann and the re-release of Channel Chops….2 seminal PS books….
