A few days ago I upgraded from Photoshop 6 to Photoshop CS2. With Photoshop 6 all my NEF files had a resolution of 300 dpi. With Photoshop CS2 the same picture has a resolutin of 240 dpi. Anybody have any idea why?

The resolution is only an interperatation reletive to the image "size".

The pixels in your images will not have changed at all. It’s just that the different program is interperating the size in a different way.

Just to put your maine at rest: Open up a file in Photoshop and go to Image>Image_Size.

Note the size in inches (or CMs).

Note the size in pixels.

Now, make sure the "resample" box is unchecked, and change the resolution from 240 ppi back up to 300 ppi.

The size (inches or CMs) will change but the size in pixels has not altered at all. Hence the term ppi (pixels per inch)

Hope this helps.

Ignore the dpi or ppi in an input image; ppi is only relevant to output format. My Canon 10D raw images purport to be 240 ppi and the tiffs or psds saved from them purport to be 300 ppi. Ignore it all, until you choose a print size.
