I have searched all over this site, and the web, and cannot figure out how to make this type of matte. I use Photoshop 5.5, and I am looking to make a matte that is transparent (oval or rectangle) in the middle, and has a gradient out to the edge. I want to use this matte in premiere to give a foggy effect around my video clips. I have messed around with the gradient tool, and can’t figure out how to get this type of effect. Any hep would be appreciated. Thanks

Post an image representing what you’re after and tell us the link. You’re likely to get better help that way.

Open your photo.
Make your selection with either marquee.
Inverse selection.
Layer style: gradient overlay.
Select radial gradient, reversed
Edit the gradient so that the "white" end is 100% transparent. Adjust the gradient overlay opacity to whatever is pleasing. Apply any other layer styles you want to add color, patterns, etc.

If this doesn’t do it for you, search for "photoshop vignette".

On a new layer place selection in middle of canvas (size/shape you want)> invert selection > fill with Black > deselect. You should have white centre/Black outer. Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and adjust blur till you get the effect you want. There are other ways to do as is usual in PS.

Oh my gosh!!! It was that easy all along, and I couldn’t figure it out. The sad thing is that I’m not new to photoshop, I just hadn’t done anything like this before. Thank you so much for your help John.

My pleasure. If you ever want the blur to be on part of the mask only, just take a history snapshot before you blur it and then ‘paint back’ the sharp edges using the History brush set at that snapshot (after blurring) you can edit > fade immediately after to fine tune as well.
