Please settle an argument…
Some file extensions are pronounced as a word…like "jaypeg" for .jpg. I’ve been doing graphics for a few years now…but the jury is still out for me on the "official" pronunciation of the file extension ".gif" (if there really is one.)

I it pronounced "GIF" as in Frank Gifford…?
(which is how I always said it…and sounds at least phonetically correct to me.)

Or is it pronounced "JIF" as in Jiffy peanut butter…? (a pronunciation that has always annoyed me.)
Or is it really up to the individual…?
"Tomato…tomahto…"
Any valid references to back up your answer would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’m not sure that yet another web page from someone with too much time on their hands counts as a ‘valid reference’, but have at it: http://www.olsenhome.com/gif/

And despite Mr. Busy there, I’ve always pronounced it the way you do, and so do most other people I know, computer programmers among them.

Basically, if someone knows what you’re talking about, you’ve served the purpose of spoken communication. Those who really insist on arguing it should perhaps be introduced to the concept of masturbation, since it not only gives them something to do but, hopefully, do in private as well 😉

Or have some fun, and alternate the usage indiscriminately in the same sentence.

And by the way, it’s pronounced "hay-pedge".

And for some of the images on the Net that’s a perfect description 😉

No references to quote, but I once worked with a man that had been on the original Compuserve GIF development team. He said they pronounced it "jif" (like the peanut butter).

pixel or pixEL?

I’m told it’s pixEL because the term means picture element

Never heard THAT before!

The pronunciation or the explanation?

Also, I heard that gif(ford) was the correct pronunciation because the ‘g’ stands for graphic or graphical.

Personally, I pronounce it like the p-nut butter.

Neither! Or both! Or whatever. Whichever.

Ha ha, I say "jay-peg" but I pronounce each letter of gif, as in "I saved the image in jee-eye-eff format." Don’t know where THAT came from.

Maybe because gif(ford) sounds so fragmentary in my mind, I cant make myself say it.
