CS Defective Profile error message

The monitor profiles generated with Colorvision Spyder used to work fine with PS CS on Win XP. But after swapping to a new monitor and generating a new profile, opening PS gets an error message saying that the newly
created profile may be defective. The new profile is used by Win XP just fine, according to the Control Panel. What does the PS message mean and how to fix it? How can I find out what PS CS is using for monitor profile? Thanks.

Why not simply recalibrate the monitor?

XP reads only a tiny part of the profile (if any).

Contact ColorVision about the problem – they may need to update their software.

I think I found the problem. OptiCal’s PreCal requires adjusting the monitor gain to the target color temperature (6500 in my case). The new monitor’s gain is preset (I think) to 9300 and has no reference point for 6500. Leaving the gain unchanged or messing with it ends up with a profile that PS rejects. By bypassing PreCal and using Standard calibration, the created profile is accepted by PS. Still would like to know how to use PreCal on this monitor.

That still sounds like a problem in the profile software – please contact Colorvision.

I did contact Colorvision, in two ways.

Colorvision tech support on the phone asked me to update the video card driver! The driver is up to date, and he has no other suggestion.

Came across a Colorvision staff in another forum, and asked him. He said that calibration without using PreCal is just fine, "PreCal is over rated."!

IOW, it is not "our problem": the problem is somewhere else, or if some function does not work, it is unimportant. These days $$ just don’t get you much.

After upgrading to CS2 a few weeks ago, I can no longer create profiles either – whatever OptiCAL creates, CS2 tells me it’s defective. I’ve looked through a lot of these groups but can’t find an answer that makes sense.

As for Colorvision’s responsiveness, I submitted my original question over a week ago and they still haven’t responded.
