How much machine do i need to work PROFESSIONALLY with cs programs: creating brochures, booklets, advertising items, huge photographs, artwork using Ill and Phs, and maybe some videowork.
I don’t want to invest in something just for my recently home hobby. I got this offer:
Intel P4 640 3.2 GHz 800mhz LGA775
Ram PC4200 DDR-DIMM 1024MB
Seagate 200GB, 7200RPM S/ATA
Radeon X600 128MB DDR PCI Express, VIVO/DVI-I

What about Ram: Iwas told that Photoshop worked slower with 2048MB than 1024MB??? I would appreciate any comment and advice

Consider adding another hard disc for PS’s scratch disc as well…

If you really are serious ask if the mobo can take another 3 SATA disks on top.

I guess I’d opt for 2 disks (another one straight away) with optional upgrades over time to 2GB Ram and another 2 SATAs if you need them.

By the time that happens Windows 64 bit will be well and truly settled in.

AMD 939 mobo’s are rumored to be able to accept new dual/multi core chips too – but that is just a rumour at the mo’ but one which should (and did) influence a purchasing decision

The word is mother board.

It is the main piece of circuitry and a work of art on its own.

It is usually the largest board within a computer and tends to be dedicated to a limited range of central processing units (cpu`s – hech let’s call them chips)

A 939 pin cpu needs a 939 pin motherboard (mobo)

I don’t really know where the name originated – maybe a google will help?

Add more Ram (P.S. CS can only access to 3.5 gigs), go with U320 scsi drives in RAID O. Watch how fast you go.
another trick that I have been using for the past 5 years; putting your OS swap drive on it’s own drive/partition.

CS can only access to 3.5 gigs

cs can only access 2

cs2 can access "more" but less than 4.

I don’t really know where the name originated

Think of a mother pig (the mobo) with all the little piglets stuck in (video card, sound card, network card, etc.)

For a moment I thought it may have originated at the time games heavily featured a mothership

Dock with mothership, refuel with …. and so on

Main board seems a nice description too

How much machine do I need

As much as you can afford.

Will it be enough? Today, yes. Tomorrow – NO!

Bah – progress! <shrug>
