I have performed some research on how to paste clipboard data into a new image in Adobe Photoshop CS2. What I have discovered is that I can use Ctrl-N to start a new image, select "Clipboard" from the drop-down menu, click Enter, and then Ctrl-V to paste the image. However, this method is too lengthy. It may only be a loss of a few seconds, but when it becomes necessary to repeat this process many times, the seconds truly do add up.

I am used to Paint Shop Pro, where you can simply paste as new image with Ctrl-V (even if other images are open). Is it possible for me to set up preferences so that I can paste clipboard data in a similar fashion? Also, can a macro be set to Shift-Insert to paste as well? I greatly appreciate the assistance.

Hey Peach, I tried your method but got nowhere. I opened a new image Control N, then couldn’t find a dropdown with "clipboard". The "paste was grayed out. Where did I screw up? I’m using CS2.

If there is something on the clipboard and you’ve hit Ctrl-N to start a new image file you first have to hit Enter to accept the default new image settings don’t you? And then all you have to do is hit Ctrl-V.

I’m CS2 also.

Yup t’is so or so believe

Once an image is in the clipboard Photoshop will use the image dimensions to create the new image from clipboard

Cool innit?

Yeah, what they said.
I found myself doing this a lot as well and eventually recorded an Action and bound it to a key.

Bobble – Um… You need data on your clipboard from PrtScn or a copy of an image from elsewhere.

Deebs – No, it’s not cool. I already know that Photoshop can do that, but I am still seeking a faster way of applying clipboard data.

Stroker – Okay, now we’re getting somewhere. Please divulge to me how you managed to construct such a macro. I ask this because the Keyboard Shortcuts dialogue box (Alt+Shift+Ctrl+K) does not seem to offer any macro recording. I simply desire to be able to dump clipboard data with a single shortcut. I don’t wish to resort to Paint Shop Pro for quick clipboard dumping when needed (and trust me, I do a lot of that).

record file> new> enter> paste from clip board into an action. put a mark in the show dialog column for the new file dialog – needed to get clipboard dimentions every time. assign to a function key. i chose F6.

so now when i have something on the clipboard, i hit F6, the new dialog pops up with past from clipboard and the dimentions filled in. Hit Enter to close the dialog and the action continues to paste into the new file.

I also added a step at the end to change the "Background" layer to "Layer 0".

so it’s really 2 keystrokes – F6, Enter – but it beats the heck out of the alternative.

Tip: if you add a Reveal All and Trim (Transparent, Top, Left), you won’t need to show the New Document dialog. Then it’s only one key ;-).

Dave – Okay, I managed to assign a "Paste from Clipboard" action to a function key. Thanks. Are there any preferences or settings that can be changed so that I would be able to assign the command to Shift-Insert instead? It’s really too bad that Adobe Photoshop does not like Ctrl-V pasting when you have no image open… It should really just paste automatically from the clipboard with that command.

Trevor – Hmm? I didn’t find it necessary to take it that far. Perhaps it’s useful for something other than what I typically do? The "transparent pixels" checkbox is disabled when I investigate after pasting clipboard data, anyway. My File: New: Clipboard: Paste action works perfectly fine for the purpose I use it for…

Now, I just need to master certain parts of the program, to make it work for me. As a pixel artist / sprite designer (and usually limited to preset colours in a palette), I have to learn completely different tricks than what Photoshop typically focuses on. I’m going to peruse more tutorials, then check back with the rest of you if I need assistance. Thanks again.

If anyone’s interested, here is an action I whipped up:

Paste From Clipboard
< http://user.fundy.net/morris/downloads/PasteFromClipboard.at n>

I’ve tested it in both Photoshop CS and CS2.

Here are the steps performed by the action:

New Document (1280 x 1024 @ 96ppi, transparent, sRGB)
Paste
Reveal All
Trim (Transparent, all sides)
Flatten
View Actual Pixels (100% zoom)

Hey Peach,
I am dumb dumb dumb. I was trying to copy from a thumbnail into the clipbd. instead of from an open image. Got it now, and everything is peachy
