XP Home SP2
1GB RAM
Scratch disk 400GB HD, 300GB free

Just got CS2 installed. Been using CS with no problems. But working with the same images in CS2 (tiny icon files, like 8K apiece), the program is sporadically freezing and sputtering the hard disk. For example, I’ll click "Save As", and everything locks up while the HD light flickers in little bursts — this goes on for 45-60 seconds or more. And sometimes, as soon as the program responds again, it will lock up and sputter the hard disk for another couple of minutes.

I managed to check the Process Manager, and during the time CS2 is freezing, "System Idle Process" is using 98% of the CPU. So the program isn’t running out of memory or anything.

I tried working in CS again, and have absolutely no problems. Going back into CS2, the freezing starts all over.

Anyone else experience this with CS2? Any advice?

That means you’re hitting the scratch disk, which means you’re out of RAM (the system doesn’t know what’s happening inside Photoshop).

Check the memory percentages in preferences.

Also check your OS swapfile setup (max = min = 2 times the installed RAM).

Also, are you working with LOTS (hundreds) of layers?
