I’ve been "dabbling" with PS since version 5 and have worn two bookcases out with "how to" books a plenty. I’d just like to thank you all, I have learnt more in the two months I have been reading your posts than I have in the last six years of manual thumbing. This forum alone makes my BB connection fee worthwhile.
Thanks to you all.

Dave,

YOU ARE WRONG THIS TIME.

While I believe that I am some-what knowledgeable, and a little artistic, in using Photoshop, I have always found your information and comments extremely helpful. I ALWAYS respect your comments and opinions.

I think that you and I share a bit of thinking in that we both truly love Photoshop and are VERY grateful to the programmers that make it all possible. At the same time we do not hesitate to mention the programΒ’s short-comings, of which there are very few.

T MIKE HYNDMAN,

Thank you for the kind post. Although I think it is directed more to the people such as Dave, and many others, I will accept the compliment as if it were intended for me as I do make the occasional helpful post.

I share your thankfulness for this forum, made possible by Adobe, (Thank you Adobe) and visited by people like Dave.

Peace,

I’ll second that. Q. Dave has been a real support for me as well.

But then there is Mathias, and Tony and Chris Cox and….

I have found this forum extremely helpful in solving glitches and the answers to my questions are usually here whereas I find that doing a search produces nothing as valuable. I too have books galore that I’ve been buying since PS4 which were useful for maybe a few things in each one. Now I go to this forum and have subscribed to lynda.com for 2 years and stopped spending the money on the how-to books.

being here for a few years now (is it really about 4?!! – just before vers. 7 came out) i think one of the coolest things is when people pop in for help, then stay and contribute to the group, becoming regulars and ‘paying it forward’, helping the next group of newbies, some of whom will undoubtedly also become regulars because of the help they’ve recieved here from fellow photoshop enthusiasts.

there’s so much knowlege and expertise here and so many great people willing to share. cheers y’all.

I like that idea… <grin>

Yes, "paying it forward" is a good way of describing it. I’ve had amazing help from the crowd here, and it seems only fair that if I can help someone out I do so!

I’d like to add my thanks to the knowlegeable people who contribute here. Back when PCs were understandable and there was no Photoshop, I could handle most problems myself, but now a forum like this is essential. Those PhDs at the Santa Fe Insitute should do a complexity study on thr Windows phenomenon.
Here’s one for the experts: many have recommended using the Firefox browser. I discovered this yesterday. Same web site, same movie stream, same skin on Windows Media Player. In IE 6, the full screen button in the skin results in a full screen movie. In Firefox, nothing happens. Am I missing something?

I think you have been here since at least PS6, Dave. I remember a thread about psicon.dll that you and I kicked around in PS 6.

I also like the Pay forward concept. I’m happy to help where I can but now since I don’t have CS2 yet, I don’t feel very helpful. πŸ™

Lundberg02 — the full screen button probably uses an ActiveX control, which won’t work in Firefox.

Thanks, Michael. See what I mean about complexity. I suppose that implies that a whole bunch of other stuff won’t work in Firefox. Hey, win some, lose some. I hope Firefox retains its immunity to hacks. I also noticed on the same web site in both browsers that Real player won’t show any video, just delivers the audio. This is the third time I’ve had a no video problem in Win XP. I have the latest RP version so that isn’t it. A year or so ago. I couldn’t get any video to play in any Windows player(RP, WMP or InterVideo) but QuickTime worked fine. Turned out to be I needed an update to Direct X, which someone here pointed out. Then I installed SP2. Again, no video. Had to go in some where in the vast reaches of XP and reduce the video acceleration. Now Real Player has done it again.

I don’t have CS2, and have absolutely no intention of ever getting it due to Adobe’s indifference to re-activation issues. Therefore, I suspect I will get receive and offer less and less PS user assistance as time goes by.

That said, I do appreciate Adobe’s maintaining this space for the free exchange of useful PS related info, tips, and tricks

What makes this forum work is that considerate individuals like Dave, OW, Thee, Q, Lawrence, and many others generously offer their know-how to folk who can’t quite figure something out in PS. They freely give away knowledge that sometimes has cost them a considerable amount of time and/or money to learn themselves.

These people quickly and tirelessly respond to questions with more than just one-liners until the O/P fully understands the concept.

The real magic of this forum though, is when people who are still new to PS assist other users with info they learned here themselves. They gained free theory and training and passed it along. It’s a PS user milestone when the person who has been asking questions begins to answer the questions of others.

Thanks to Adobe for the site, the regulars (and not so regulars), who offer solutions to those who request them, and to those folk who pass along what was passed along to them.

Have you tried Avant Browser?

On all the computers I’ve tried it it screams

<F11> and <F12> keys do a marvellous job too

On the Firefox front you may wish to try Tools > Extensions

There is a very nice one which opt to use IE for specific (named) sites – great for contacting OS basecamp πŸ™‚

I echo the sentiments – a great site.

If there isn’t a website host Best Practice award I guess there should be

Nobody likes me

That’s not true. I’m sure everyone holds you in awe!

Okay, Okay. Go on – groan

Seriously though. I’d like to echo the sentiments expressed throughout this thread.

I was a casual visitor to this forum for several years and learned so much – without even asking a single question!

Just reading the replies here improved my understanding of this wonderful program which was obviously beginning to play an enormous role in my professional life. In fact much more so than wading through pages and pages of dry text books and manuals.

I am only too glad to have now joined the ranks of those who are "paying it forward" on this forum.

….and d’you know – the biggest thing I have learnt is you never stop learning.

Chris.

ID. Awe, I’m sorry I didn’t mention you by name. I included you as "many others" in the post. There’s just so many folk here who generously share their experiences and expertise that I couldn’t name them all. I bet you couldn’t either πŸ™‚

While there are many PS forums out there, what I find unique about this one is that for the most part, the regulars are friendly poeple who’ve created and environment where they can stray off the topic slightly and joke around a bit. It’s not all just ask a question/answer a question.

And the group as a whole isn’t above anyone else. For example, if an original poster appears to be a pirate, they’re treated (usually politely) as such. If they aren’t a pirate, the group apologizes for the misunderstanding.

I also like knowing I can trash the prefs at my discretion and no one will think less of me, that there are least three ways of doing anything in Photoshop and that you guys will tell me ten of them, and that I never, ever have to read the first post. πŸ™‚

Thanks!

Thomas: Was just jesting. Been on these forums for 10 years now and have always tried to help those who need it, skewer those who need it, confront falsehoods when necessary. I often do not tell posters exactly how to do things because there are more than three ways to do anything, but I do remind people that experimentation is the greatest learning experience of all, there is no substitute for it. I also believe that anyone who says they know everything about Photoshop is lying because when you do the math, I don’t think that anyone can possibly remember over a million effect variations. Although the fundamentals are few and straightforward, their combinations are Awe inspiring.
