This question has been posed previously but as yet any resolutions put forward have not solved my problem which is:
When I try to save a ‘flattened’ PSD file as a JPEG, Photoshop 7 automatically adds the .psd extension to the file even though I have used the drop down save as option of JPEG. The program will ask me if I want to overwrite the existing psd file even though I have specified a jpeg. Once the file is saved as a psd I cannot open it again as the program states that it is unable to open the file because it is an unrecognisable file format even though the extension is .psd.
Has anybody got an answer to this? is it a Photoshop problem or a Windows XP glitch. I’ve renewed my preference file and also switched user accounts without success. I’ve recently added the Genuine Fractals plug in which may have caused the problem. Any similarities out there in the community?
Certainly grateful for your help.

I have never experienced this in PS6, 7 or CS and I frequently flatten PSD images for use as jpegs. In fact I just looked at my files in Explorer and see probably hundreds of images with the same name in front of the dot and psd or jpeg afterward.

Therefore I would have to conclude there is some problem in your installation, possibly due to a bug in PS that only shows up under certain conditions, or perhaps in the way you are using the drop down boxes. Have you tried renaming the file, for example adding a number or letter after the name, and making sure there is no "psd" anywhere in the name when you want to save a psd image as a jpeg?

Are you using Save, or Save As…?

To find out if the GF plug-in is causing this:

Go to the plug-in folder and add a tilde (~) in front of the plug-in’s file name to temporarily disable it. Then reset the Prefs file again.

You are a star, my assumption was right and it is the Genuine Fractals plug-in that is causing the problem, I would like to find the reason why but I’m not too bothered as I don’t think much of the program really. Thanks for the tilde tip, which I would have been grateful for anyway. Does that work on all files or just plug-ins?
