I just installed my upgrade of Photoshop CS2 and it apparently went well. I opened the program and it froze a couple of times but it open files fine and I was able to apply a couple of filters. I the went to open my Epson Perfection scanner and PS froze and never opened it. I then went to my Nikon coolscan and it froze. I closed CS2 and try the same with my old reliable Photoshop 6.0 and PS froze here also. I then try to open both scanners by themselves and they do not respond. They are frozen! Gone! I don’t have a clue! Could it be a confusion between Photoshop? Are the softwares from this scanners now looking for something that I need to specify?

Thanks,

Andres

Hi Dave, I installed the latest driver AFTER CS2, so I should uninstall CS2 and then reinstall cs2 again?

I uninstalled CS2 and I updated the firmware of Nikon and the latest software from Espson, both scanners are still frozen. What next uninstall the scanners and reinstall them and then Photoshop?

what do you mean by they are frozen? after you’ve scanned the image, you get to Photoshop, but cannot do anything? have you tried using Alt+tab to bring the scanner program on the front?

What are the exact reference of the scanners, and the drivers you used? Do they work in other applications than photoshop?

Pierre, Yesterday I was working on Photoshop 6.01 with both my Nikon Cooscan IV ED and my Epson 1650 with no problems. I decided to installed the upgrade CS2. It went without a glitch but when I went to open the Epson the computer just hang there, I had to ctrl-alt delete to get out of CS2. So then I tried the Nikon film scanner with the same result. I managed to opened once in ps6 but that was it. Now they would not open from Painter, Photopaint or worse from themselves as stan dalone programs. I am able to open Epson smart panel but all the functions just hang there waiting for something. I think that when I installed the newest drivers after I have already installed and uninstalled CS2, so I am thinking that I may have to remove both scanners, do a fresh install and then reinstall CS2. My driver for the Epson is 5.7.1.0 and the firmware for my Nikon is 120. My software is the original 3.1.

I appreciate your help very much,

Andres

Andres…my 1650 is working fine…did a clean install of CS2…sounds like something happened to the twain when you installed…When you first open Photoshop do you notice a line that says Initializing Twain Drivers in the white startup box???

Hello Christine! Wel tonight I will uninstall my 2 scanners, reinstall them with the latest drivers and hope that nothing got messed up with TWAIN 32. No I did not see that line about initializing Twain drivers. One more thing what is the difference between firmware and software? Nikon website is full of warnings that if you even move the mouse while updating your firmware you it could render your scanner useless!

Firmware is copied to a chip in the device, scanners in this case. I think of it as receiving the software commands and then being used to tell the scanner what to do and how to do it.

Software is on a drive in the computer and you tell it what you want the scanner to do with it being the "translator".

There probably is a LOT better way to explain it, but this is the best I can do.

Andres…Don’t know about the Nikon…too rich for my blood as I don’t do much film/slide scanning over and above what the 1650 and the 3170 can handle…from what I know firmware is like a bios chip…and you are updating the "guts" of the hardware…Dave Milbut would actually be able to give you a better definition…)

What I would do is uninstall the 1650 scanner and then reinstall the scanner and update the drivers

Then reinstall Photoshop CS2 and see what happens…make sure your scanner is plugged in and on before opening photoshop so photoshop "catches" the twain drivers on opening. If your scanner is not on, Photoshop doesn’t "catch" the driver and you have to shut down photoshop, turn on your scannner and then re-open photoshop…

Make sure that you delete the preferences file before uninstalling Photoshop…the old preferences sometimes do not delete when re-installing…

Well after all this suffering I called Nikon to make sure I was downloading the correct software and they told me that the Nikon Plugin DOES NOT WORK WITH CS2!!! It seems some people managed to make Nikon 4000 and some of the newers one work but as per now most of their scanners do not work with CS2. The tech support told me that they will come out with a fix in about 3 months, she even recommended for me to continue working with PS 6.0 because she said that most likely the new firmware-software from Nikon would not make my coolscan IV ED work with CS2. What a freakin bummer!

Genuine Fractals won’t work with CS2 either. Feh!!!

But life doesn’t stand still, and the manufacturers need some excuse to get us to buy new stuff.

<reads and makes note to wait for CS-3 download trial to be available and to test ALL plug-ins before up-grading from CS-1>

I’m skipping CS-2.

Bill–that’s a shame, there is so much here that you will like and the plug in makers will catch up (at least the good ones will…)

If you have 2 hard drives you can leave CS1 and have CS2 installed…

I’m having the same problem and have found a work around which makes me suspect that the problem isn’t in the scanner but in Photoshop CS2. I’m running an Epson 1640SU scanner and it quit just after I installed my upgrade. It was showing the same problems as mentioned in an earlier post, I was able to scan with the Epson Twain acquire but then Photoshop CS2 would hang. And, the WIA interface now installed is dumbed down so far that it’s suitable only for a hamster on crack. Also it wouldn’t let me scan slides or negatives just flatbed material.

The problem appears to be in Adobe’s new WIA interface. I just tried running Macromedia Fireworks as suggested which I fortunately have and my Twain acquire worked just fine. I guess at this point I would also have to echo the sentiment that the upgrade to CS2 may not be worth it unless you’ve got an extra $500 or $600 kicking around to buy new hardware to make it work. I wonder what Adobe would say to me presenting them with a bill for the four hours in lost production time today?

My Nikon Coolscan V ED works just fine in Photoshop CS and CS2 via the Twain interface. No plugin needed. Using version 4.0.2 of the NikonScan software.

Christine,

Actually I would have to upgrade the entire computer to run CS-II and, except for staying current in the behind the interface "hidden improvements" with ACR, didn’t see anything much I really could use. I’m already staying in 16 bit ProPhoto color space to the actual printing. Perhaps CS-III (Photoshop-10) will have something I will see a real need for. CS-I sure did.

As for the scanners, I use Hamrick’s VueScan and don’t scan directly into CS. That isn’t a problem for me. However, possibly not having NoiseNinja, PhotoZoom Pro, and one or two other plug-ins at my mouse click would be a major loss.
