Well let’s start with equipment.
AMD Athlon XP Barton 1.8 Ghz
1Gb Crucial RAM
Shuttle Ultra 400 333 FSB
C: Seagate 160G
D: Seagate 40G “Photoshop scratch disk”, nothing else on it Win XP page files = MIN/MAX = 3.0Gb
Photoshop RAM allocation is at 60% currently, but have tried settings from 50% up to 75% with no apparent change in performance.
At 70% Windows task manager reports 90Meg available even when working on 16 bit images, multiple layers, multiple images open at once, and while running filters as well as history brush and all with Bridge open minimized.
Hard drive has clean registry, defragged, XP prefetch folder cleared, and no tmp files on the system.

PSCS has been running like a dream on this machine, re-draws and effects happen without any lag what so ever. Now with CS2 installed everything has slowed terribly. Burning or dodging requires a 5 to 10 second wait for the machine to catch up, moves in a composite image require longer. Even when I mouse over the palette tabs in the palette well, it takes a good 2 seconds before the tab come to the front of the well, and when I select a palette I can almost watch it drop down. With CS these things happened almost instantaneously.
I don’t know whether I should uninstall CS2 and go back to CS until I can build a faster machine, or if there’s something I’ve overlooked in my setup.
I’ve been watching the posts here, and it seems as though I’m not the only one with performance issues since upgrading to CS2. I could understand if I was trying to run the app. On a 400Mhz Celeron with 512K of RAM and a 100Mhz FSB MB, but I think my box should be able to handle it. Maybe not, nay help would be greatly appreciated. Are you out there Chris?

Check your drivers for the video card. Get the latest and gratest from the manufacturer.

Some video cards are having problems in slowing down CS2. The problem is recognized and is being addressed, according to the Adobe staff who post here.

Have there been any specific issues relating to the cards? In other words, if I buy a new video card, what am I looking for?
Thanks for the reply, I’m glad to see it appears to be a known issue and I’m not going nuts. Larry

Just updated the drivers on the video card, no change. I don’t mind buying a new card if I knew what specific issues I should be looking for.

In your display properties, reduce the hardware acceleration.

Search for the other threadsa about redraw issues.

Update:
after working with the hardware acceleration up and down I haven’t found any change in performance. I spent a bit of time reading through the posts on this and other forums regarding CS2 performance and re-draw issues. Through all of this two things become apparent. First is I’m not the only one who has this problem, and there seems to be a lean toward some type of compatibility issue between CS2 and the video card. So I’ve ordered a Matrox Millennium P650 64Meg video card and I’ll go from there.
I wanted to upgrade anyway so if it doesn’t cure my performance issue, no harm no foul. I’ll just re-install CS and wait for a real fix to develop. If the card fixes the problem, I’ll post an update.
Regards to all
Larry
