I have CS2 with 3gig RAM on a dual proceser XEON PC using 2000. I can only get 1770 mb max. It runs fine at 100%. Why can’t I get 2gig available in the preferences?

The remainder of the space is used for the program and data structures needed by a virtual operating system.
You can increase the 2gb allocation to 3gb via the /3GB switch in bootini. You still will not be able to edit 3GB images.

Useful reading regarding ram use in Photoshop CS2.

See: Photoshop CS2-How much RAM? – Fact < http://photoshopnews.com/2005/04/04/photoshop-cs2-how-much-r am-fact/>

Also see: Memory allocation and usage (Photoshop CS2) <http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/320005.html/>from the Adobe Support Knowledgebase.

I set the /3GB switch in the boot.ini. There was no change, still 1770mb.

From the above links: "If you are running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2, you can set the 3 GB switch in the boot.ini file, which allows Photoshop to use up to 3 GB of RAM."

So, you need XP, can’t do it with Win 2K.

that’s odd. is ps coded to work that way? win2k handles the switch, why wouldn’t ps (or any app) see the extra ram?

Don’t know. . .but that’s what the docs say. . .

I put the boot parameter in the wrong place. I added it isolated on an empty line. This was wrong because it belongs on the previous line at the end. Now I have 2709 mb available. I selected 75% which gave me 2031 mb. I’ll try this for a while then inch it up and see how it goes. It does work with win2k.
Thanks
