Hi Gang,

I make photographs, and that’s pretty much all Photoshop is used for. I have Martin Evening’s books (Photoshop for Photographers) and Katrin Eismann’s book on retouching. Both have been very useful, and both are well worn. I was wondering if there are any other recommended books for working with photographs. I’m not into digital trickery or heavy manipulation, although I can use help with masking, and I don’t understand paths (or even if paths are useful in what I do). I’m getting Katrin Eismann’s book on masking soon, so that’s covered.

Thanks,

Shel (PS CS, WinXP)

Yes, Martin Evening’s Photoshop for Photographers is a good choice.

Another one to consider is Photoshop Color Correction by Michael Kieran ( <http://tinyurl.com/cqkfr> ). [If you’re interested in it, send me an email (available in my profile), and I can give you more details and suggest the cheapest place to get it.]

And, of course, if you’re shooting RAW, you absolutely must have Bruce Fraser’s Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS2 ( <http://tinyurl.com/8ugrj> ). I think you can get a deal on that one directly from the Peachpit Press website.

Dan Margulis: Professional Photoshop and if you can find it Photoshop Channel Chops by Bruce Fraser et al. (supposedly Peachpit is reprinting it)

Personally I prefer Margulis’ Professional Photoshop to Kieran’s Photoshop Color correction, although Kieran’s is more accessible to a beginner.

And Trevor’s recommendation of Real World Adobe Camera RAW is a very good one.

Yes, I should have thought to mention Dan Margulis’ Professional Photoshop, as I also have that one.

I agree with all the above suggestions and add this if you are a Nature photographer. John Shaw is a great nature photographer and this e-book is specifically just to get the most out of straight forward outdoor photography. He’s a pro who just is interested in "developing" a good photograph.
